Eschewing the conventional promotional strategies of synagogues and looking for a more engaging, compelling, and memorable touch, Ely Rosenstock of the Young Israel of East Brunswick filmed a parody of “Alexander Hamilton,” the opening song of Hamilton: An American Musical, to welcome Rabbi Efrayim Unterman as the congregation’s new rabbi.

Dressed in full Hamilton garb, Ely describes the East Brunswick community as well as Rabbi Unterman and his family, the congregation, and other neighborhood features. Several members of the community make guest appearances, as does the shul’s former leader, Rabbi Jay Weinstein, who made aliyah to Israel the previous summer. Published on January 2, 2017, the lighthearted video garnered 20,000 views, 220 shares, and countless accolades in just the first two months.
