The Other Talmud

When we say “the Talmud,” we usually mean the Talmud Bavli, AKA the Babylonian Talmud. This we cover quite thoroughly through our Daf Yomi and related series. But did you know that there’s another Talmud?

The Talmud Yerushalmi, AKA the Jerusalem Talmud, was completed perhaps 150 years earlier than the Bavli. While the Bavli is considered more authoritative – in part because the editors of the Bavli were familiar with the earlier work and could consider its contents in their deliberations – the Yerushalmi is also a rich tapestry of Jewish thought.

OU Torah has two series that focus on the Talmud Yerushalmi. In Rabbi Grossman on Talmud Yerushalmi, the OU’s Senior Rabbinic Coordinator and Director of Kosher Education Rabbi Yosef Grossman takes us through that classic work in his own thorough and insightful fashion. In Lessons from Eretz Yisrael, Michael Linetsky, Director of the Torat Eretz Yisrael Institute, shares brief thoughts from the Yerushalmi on matters of everyday concern.

How’s your familiarity with the Yerushalmi? If you’ve never experienced this indispensable piece of our mesorah, you now have two opportunities!
