The US Embassy will officially relocate to Jerusalem from Tel Aviv in May, timed to coincide with Israel’s 70th anniversary according to a State Department spokesman. An exact date for the move was not specified. According to the spokesman, the embassy is to be located in a southern Jerusalem neighborhood, on the side that Israel held before 1967. Building a new embassy will take at least three years, so much of the embassy’s daily operations would likely continue to be performed in Tel Aviv.
The embassy move was originally called for 2019. It now appears that the move will occur gradually over that time in a number of phases.
