We recently reported on the murder of Mirelle Kanol, an 85-year-old Holocaust survivor found stabbed and burned in her Paris apartment. At that time, SPCJ, the security unit of the French Jewish community, indicated that there was no evidence to suggest an anti-Semitic motive. Now, prosecutors investigating the case are saying that the two suspects in custody targeted Kanol because she was Jewish.
One of the suspects in custody is Kanol’s 29-year-old neighbor, who knew her well. According to Kanol’s son, the suspect was a regular visitor to his mother, whom she treated “like a son.” The suspect had visited Kanol on the day of her murder.
