Office of the President: The President of the State of Israel Meets with OU Delegation

01 Feb 2023

President Yitzhak Herzog met with a delegation from the Orthodox Union, an organization that works to deepen the commitment of the Orthodox communities in North America to the Torah and their heritage and strengthen Jewish identity among the entire Jewish People. The delegation, led by Rabbi Moshe Hauer, Executive Vice President of the OU, praised the president for his efforts in strengthening the unity of the Jewish nation.

The OU delegation met at the home of the country’s President, Yitzhak Herzog, in Jerusalem. The delegation, headed by Rabbi Hauer, also included the president of OU Israel, Stuart Hershkowitz, and Rabbi Avi Berman, the Executive Director of OU Israel.

During the meeting, Rabbi Hauer expressed concern about the lack of unity among the people of Israel and the increasing tensions between the State of Israel and some American Jews.

Rabbi Hauer said that, unfortunately, many Jews in the United States are hearing and reading false and negative information about the State of Israel, the Israeli government and the Israeli people, and that there is a strong need for dialogue, listening and understanding.

The delegation addressed President Herzog and said that the President has the potential to be a unifying factor between the Jews of the Diaspora and the entire nation of Israel. They thanked him for his many years of commendable work on behalf of the entire Jewish people and sought to strengthen him.

President Herzog is long familiar with the organization’s extensive activity in America and around the world, and especially in its work in Israel encouraging immigration and supporting immigrants and its programs for at-risk youth in Israel.

During the meeting, the President praised the organization and its work in the field of education, Jewish identity and absorption, and noted that it is very important that people are aware of the organization’s efforts to strengthen Jewish identity and unify the Jewish people. The president mentioned that their support gives him strength to continue working toward fostering a spirit of dialogue and the finding of common ground throughout his tenure serving as Israel’s President.

At the end of the meeting, the President of the State presented a gift, the book “Heichal Yitzchak” written by the president’s grandfather, Rabbi Yitzhak Halevi Herzog, with a personal dedication to Rabbi Hauer and wrote that the gift is given to him in friendship and appreciation.
