OU’s Rabbi Weil to Speak at Jewish Medical Ethics Conference, July 4-7

27 Jun 2013

OU’S RABBI WEIL TO PARTICIPATE AT FIFTH INTERNATIONAL CONFERENCE ON JEWISH MEDICAL ETHICS AS SCHOLAR-IN-RESIDENCE, JULY 4-7

Rabbi Steven Weil, executive vice president of the Orthodox Union, will join an all-star line-up of leading rabbis and healthcare professionals at the Fifth International Conference on Jewish Medical Ethics to serve as Scholar-in-Residence, Thursday July 4-Sunday, July 7. The Conference will be held at the High Peaks Resort in Lake Placid, New York.

The Orthodox Union has been a co-sponsor of the Conference since its initial year, which is a project of Torah in Motion, a Toronto-based organization that applies Judaism and Torah study to everyday challenges. The program’s agenda includes lectures, classes, panel discussion, and text-based learning.

Friday morning, Rabbi Weil will present a workshop on family dynamics, addressing “Men are From Mars and Women are From Venus.” Rabbi Weil will be the featured speaker beginning at 9:15 p.m. as part of an Oneg Shabbat, discussing “The Two Greatest Challenges Confronting Orthodox Judaism in the 21st Century.”

Shabbat morning, Parshat Matot-Masei, Rabbi Weil will speak at 8:30 a.m. on “The Seventh Million.” Beginning at 11:30 a.m. Rabbi Weil will offer a workshop on “The One Man Who Could Have Prevented the Churban.”

According to Rabbi Jay Kelman, founder of Torah in Motion and conference coordinator, “Jewish laws and values are so all-encompassing that they touch upon every part of life—business dealings, milestones in life such as birth, marriage and death—and health and medicine. In recognition of the much-varied and thought-provoking world of medical ethics in this age of modern medical advancements we look forward to Rabbi Weil participating in the Medical Ethics Conference as Scholar-in-Residence. The role of the rabbi has developed to care for the emotional and physical well being of others in addition to their spiritual care, and I am thrilled that Rabbi Weil will join in providing the participants with an added dimension of intellectual and spiritual stimulation to advance their work and add tremendous depth to our program.”
