OU’S RABBI DOVID BASHEVKIN TO VISIT HARRISBURG AS SCHOLAR-IN-RESIDENCE AT KESHER ISRAEL CONGREGATION, DECEMBER 7-8

Rabbi Dovid Bashevkin, Associate Director of Education for National NCSY | Jewish Youth Leadership, will visit the Harrisburg Jewish community as Scholar-in-Residence at Kesher Israel Congregation for Friday, December 7 and Saturday, December 8 (Shabbat Erev Chanukah, Parshat Vayeishev). The OU member synagogue is located at 2500 N. Third Street.

NCSY is the international youth movement of the Orthodox Union. Rabbi Bashevkin’s visit is part of a Community Weekend hosted by the Karasik Department of Synagogue Services | Congregation Support Network of the Orthodox Union.

Rabbi Bashevkin will speak at a Friday night oneg beginning at 7:30 p.m., held at a private residence, at which he will discuss “What are Lady Gaga and Justin Bieber Teaching Our Children? The Good News and the Bad News.” Shabbat morning, he will speak in the Main Sanctuary on “Chanukah, Mysticism, and the Scientific Revolution.” During seudat shlishit, which will follow mincha at 4:00 pm., Rabbi Bashevkin will address “The ‘Dead Chasidim’: Why Breslov Chasidism Bring So Much Life.”

Rabbi Akiva Males, Rabbi of Kesher Israel Congregation, noted, “Our shul is looking forward to hearing from Rabbi Dovid Bashevkin on his wide array of topics. I am sure he will greatly enhance our community’s Shabbat — and will also help us to better understand some of the issues facing today’s Orthodox youth; help us to gain a new perspective on Chanukah; as well as to enlighten us regarding the recent surge in popularity of Breslov Chasidism.”

He also emphasized, “As an OU member synagogue, we have always felt appreciative of the Orthodox Union. However, it is Shabbatons like this one that really help us feel part of a larger network of synagogues, and also to gain a better appreciation for some of the great work the OU does. On behalf of Kesher Israel Congregation, I thank the OU for its on-going efforts on our behalf.”
