OUR WAY WELCOMES JEWISH DEAF TO SUFFERN FOR OU SHABBATON, FEBRUARY 1-2

This winter season, the Orthodox Union’s Our Way program will bring its popular and meaningful Shabbaton program for Jewish deaf and their families to Suffern, February 1-2. The Shabbaton is designed to meet the specific needs of the deaf and hearing impaired and to provide them with a one-of-a-kind Sabbath experience. It will be held at Congregation Bais Torah, 89 West Carlton Road.
Highlights of the Shabbaton include the presence of Deaf Scholars-in-Residence Samuel and Rochelle Landau. Samuel, who was born in Israel, received his BA in Jewish Studies from Yeshiva University, and currently works at P.S. 47 in Manhattan, a school for deaf children. Rochelle, a native of New York City, has a degree in Special Education from New York University and a degree in Teaching American Sign Language from Columbia University, Teachers College. They have been coordinators of the Jewish Deaf Singles Registry for over 15 years, and are actively involved with Our Way.
The Shabbaton Host is Moshe Lehmann, who has been hearing impaired since birth. He holds an AAS degree from Bergen Community College, has attended Neve Zion for two years in Israel, and currently works for GFI, Inc. He is actively involved in Bais Torah activities, and has been a part of Our Way since he was eight years old. Moshe is looking forward to welcoming Shabbaton participants to Monsey.
Along with special programming, the Our Way Shabbaton will provide three delicious meals and snacks; an interpreted synagogue service; a beginner’s prayer service; child care; and an opportunity to join together with others from the deaf community to live and learn about Judaism.
On Friday night, Samuel Landau will present, Jerusalem: Keep it One, Keep it Ours. Saturday day session will be on Mitzvos: Between One Jew and Another.
