OU AND SHULAMITH ELEMENTARY SCHOOL FOR GIRLS PRESENT COMMUNITY-WIDE PROGRAM: “GIVING THE MOST TO OUR CHILDREN AND GETTING THE MOST OUT OF BEING A PARENT,” MAY 15 IN BROOKLYN

As part of its successful “Positive Jewish Parenting” initiative, the Orthodox Union Department of Community Services presents “Strengthening Our Parenting Skills” on Sunday, May 15 in partnership with Shulamith Elementary School for Girls, in Brooklyn. Held from 9:30 a.m-12:00 noon at Shulamith, 1277 East 14th Street, the community-wide conference for parents will focus on strengthening practical parenting skills with useful advice, ideas and suggestions from leading communal and professional experts. Admission is $10 per person.

The keynote address, from 9:45 a.m.-10:45 a.m., will be given on “How to Raise Children with Jewish Values in Our Challenging World” by Rabbi Ralph Pelcovitz and Dr. David Pelcovitz, co-authors of “Balanced Parenting,” a guidebook to raising children. Rabbi Pelcovitz is Rabbi Emeritus of Congregation Kneseth Israel of Far Rockaway. Dr. Pelcovitz is a clinical child psychologist, who holds the Gwendolyn and Joseph Straus Chair in Jewish Education at Yeshiva University’s Azrieli Graduate School of Jewish Education and Administration, where he is also Special Assistant to the President of the University.

According to Frank Buchweitz, OU National Director of Community Services and Special Projects: “How can today’s parents best raise a child with all of the challenges of society? What are the tools essential for raising successful and happy children? Answering these critical questions is the goal of our keynote presentation addressing parental concerns, including how to: motivate your children, instill values, teach them to cope with anger, deal with peer pressure, respond to contemporary challenges, and other issues. The workshops will expand on these topics.”

Two workshops will be offered after the keynote on significant issues. They are as follows:

• “Instilling and Strengthening Positive Self-Esteem in Children,” with Dr. David Lieberman, an award-winning author and internationally recognized leader in the field of human behavior and interpersonal relationships;

• “The Over-Extended Family: How to Manage Your Time Effectively,” with Rachel Pill, LCSW who maintains a private practice in Lawrence. She is the Co-Founder and Co-Director of the Long Island Guidance and Wellness Center, a mental health agency providing groups and workshops on topics such as parenting and marriage.

Opportunity for sponsorships are still available. Group childcare for ages 3-10 is available with advanced pre-registration by calling Rina Kravitz at (718) 376-1318.
