OU FINANCIAL MANAGEMENT SEMINAR AND WEBCAST, SEPTEMBER 13, TO ADVISE SYNAGOGUES ON AVOIDING AND SPOTTING THEFT OF RESOURCES
Synagogues are not immune from the financial chicanery that afflicts other non-profits and for-profit businesses as well. As we enter the period of the high holidays it is a good time to reflect not only on our individual actions but also on our communal responsibilities. To provide guidance to shuls on how to protect themselves and avoid being the victims of frauds, embezzlement and outright theft, the Orthodox Union will present “A Financial Management Seminar and Webcast,” to originate from OU Headquarters on Tuesday, September 13 at 5:30 p.m. EDT.
It will be available live on the web at www.ou.org/webcast_synserv/ and will then be archived.
A presentation of the OU Karasick Department of Synagogue Services | Congregation Support Network, the webcast is directed at synagogue boards, presidents, and executive directors nationally.
The seminar will be moderated by Jacob Weichholz, CPA, Director J.H. Cohn L.L.P. It will concentrate on establishing internal controls; cash receipts; payroll; investments; and spotting red flags.
The panel of experts will include:
• Mel Zachter, CPA, Partner, Loeb & Troper; he has provided audit and consulting services to a full spectrum of not-for-profit organizations for the last four decades;
• Harold Gelernter, CPA, Partner, Loeb & Troper; he provides a full range of audit and consulting services to not-for-profit organizations; and
• Anne Goldberg, Executive Director, Congregation AABJ&D, West Orange, NJ; prior to coming to her current synagogue in 1998, she served as Executive Director of Congregation Schara Tzekek in Vancouver, BC.
