ORTHODOX UNION PRESENTS JEWISH LIFE ON THE SECULAR COLLEGE CAMPUS TO OFFER INSIGHTS INTO SPIRITUAL CHALLENGES MANY JEWISH STUDENTS FACE
Explore the religious challenges facing Orthodox Jewish students on the secular college campus and ways to counteract those challenges at the Orthodox Union’s symposium, Jewish Life on the Secular College Campus, Sunday, November 4. The presentation will be held at the Young Israel of Woodmere, 859 Peninsula Blvd., 7:00 to 9:00 p.m.
Jewish Life on the Secular College Campus is a program of the OU’s Department of Community Services, NCSY and the Heshe and Harriet Seif Jewish Learning Initiative on Campus (JLIC). The presentation is open to parents, high school juniors and seniors, and post Israel college-bound students from the Five Towns and beyond.
JLIC and NCSY are programs of the Orthodox Union. The JLIC initiative, in coordination with Hillel and Torah MiTzion, brings a young rabbi and his wife to the campus, where they offer study of Jewish texts, one on one and in groups; Sabbath, holiday and daily synagogue services; as well as mentoring. JLIC currently serves 15 campuses: Boston University, Brandeis, University of Massachusetts/Amherst, Yale, NYU, Brooklyn College, Cornell, Princeton, Rutgers, University of Pennsylvania, Johns Hopkins, University of Maryland, University of Florida, University of Illinois, and UCLA.
NCSY provides teenagers with the ability to learn about their Jewish heritage in a fun and relaxed atmosphere, through its many social and educational programs.
“This session is an outstanding opportunity for parents and students who are considering secular college campuses to learn about the numerous religious support activities and programs that take place through JLIC,” declared Frank Buchweitz, National Director of the Department of Community Services. “One can maintain an active and vibrant Orthodox Jewish lifestyle through their knowledge and involvement in this program.”
The keynote presentation, the New Orthodoxy on College Campuses, will be delivered by Rabbi Yehuda Sarna, JLIC Educator and Hillel Manager of Religious Life, Bronfman Center for Jewish Student Life at NYU.
Following the keynote address, in a panel moderated by Rabbi Aryeh Lightstone, Regional Director of Long Island NCSY, panelists will give short introductions about themselves and discuss Jewish life on their respective campuses. They will also answer questions from the audience.
The panelists include,
• Rabbi Ilan Haber, National Director, Seif Jewish Learning Initiative on Campus;
• Julie Yanofsky-Goldstein, former JLIC Educator at UCLA;
• Adam Teitcher, president of the Orthodox Community at University of Pennsylvania; and,
• Orly Elstein, president of the Orthodox Community at Rutgers.
Rabbi Haber will also speak about the many exciting opportunities available with JLIC.
