OU Presents Challenges Facing Families Today, March 18, at Young Israel of Kew Gardens Hills

27 Feb 2007

ORTHODOX UNION PRESENTS CHALLENGES FACING FAMILIES TODAY, MARCH 18, AT YOUNG ISRAEL OF KEW GARDENS HILLS

The Orthodox Union, in conjunction with the Young Israel of Kew Gardens Hills, on Sunday, March 18, will present Challenges Facing Families Today, an informative breakfast symposium which will offer insightful solutions to parents. It will be held at the synagogue, 150-05 70th Road in Kew Gardens Hills at 9:30 a.m.

The symposium will be led by Rabbi Ralph Pelcovitz and Dr. David Pelcovitz, co-authors of Balanced Parenting, a guidebook to raising children. Rabbi Pelcovitz is Rabbi Emeritus of Congregation Kneseth Israel of Far Rockaway, NY. Dr. Pelcovitz is a clinical child psychologist, who holds the Gwendolyn and Joseph Straus Chair in Jewish Education at Yeshiva University’s Azrieli Graduate School of Jewish Education and Administration, where he is also Special Assistant to the President of the University.

“Family life is at the heart of the Orthodox experience. In today’s day and age however, things aren’t as simple as they may have been in the past,” declared Frank Buchweitz, National Director of Community Services and Special Projects. “Stresses and strains are as likely to occur in Orthodox families as they are in the community at large.”

“Rabbi Ralph Pelcovitz and Dr. David Pelcovitz, an extraordinary father and son combination, have a unique insight into the Orthodox family — into the lives of children, parents and grandparents as well. The Pelcovitz’ are a generation apart but they are on the same page in terms of what it takes to build a Jewish home. Their advice should not be missed,” he said.

The following topics will be covered:

•Keeping the family intact;

•When do we integrate and when do we isolate from society’s influences?

•Protective vs. overprotective parenting;

•Religious differences with our children;

•The increasing role of grandparents.

Sponsors of the event include Mr. and Mrs. Heshy Gutterman, Rabbi and Mrs. Seymour Leibler, Mr. and Mrs. Jacob Weinstein and Mr. Leo Ziegel.

The Young Israel of Kew Gardens Hills is a site of many OU events. Rabbi Fabian Schonfeld is a member of OU Board of Directors; Assistant Rabbi, Rabbi Yoel Schonfeld is Rabbinic Coordinator in the OU Kosher Department.

Admission is $11 per person, which includes breakfast; advance registration is required. For more information and to register contact 718-261-9723.
