ORTHODOX UNION MOURNS THE PASSING OF SENATOR ARLEN SPECTER

Today, the leadership of the Union of Orthodox Jewish Congregations of America issued the following statement in the wake of Senator Arlen Specter’s passing yesterday:

The leadership of the Union of Orthodox Jewish Congregations of America — the nation’s largest Orthodox Jewish umbrella organization — expresses our sorrow at the news that Senator Arlen Specter passed away yesterday.

Senator Specter proudly and ably served the people of the United States for decades. Among his many efforts, Senator Specter was a leader and ally in many causes championed by the Jewish community; he was a staunch supporter of a strong U.S.-Israel relationship’ fierce advocate for religious liberty; promoter of freedom for Soviet Jewry, and more. Toward the end of his Senate tenure, we at the Orthodox Union worked closely with Senator Specter to support the security of our community through the Nonprofit Security Grant Program, as well as advocating for new medical breakthroughs via public funding for stem cell research.

The leadership of the Orthodox Union extends our deep condolences and sympathy to Senator Specter’s family with the traditional Jewish statement: “May the Omnipresent God comfort you among the mourners of Zion and Jerusalem.”
