ORTHODOX UNION CO-SPONSORS FREE PROGRAM IN FOREST HILLS, “WEATHERING THE ECONOMIC STORM – A COMMUNITY APPROACH TO NAVIGATING OUR TROUBLED ECONOMIC TIMES,” SUNDAY, FEBRUARY 7
In response to the economic challenges that so many of us are facing today, the Orthodox Union with its co-sponsoring organizations presents a FREE program, “Weathering the Economic Storm – A Community Approach to Navigating our Troubled Economic Times,” at the Young Israel of Forest Hills on Sunday, February 7, from 9:00 a.m.-12:30 p.m. This event will present a series of workshops and practical approaches to help those employed as well as those seeking employment to meet their personal financial challenges effectively.
The OU’s Department of Community Services and the OU’s Job Board are organizing the event together with the Queens Jewish Community Council; Vaad Harabonim of Queens; UJA-Federation of New York’s Connect-to-Care; Jewish Queens United for Employment; FEGS Health and Human Services System; and the Metropolitan Council on Jewish Poverty, as well as several other groups.
Frank Buchweitz, National Director of Community Services and Special Projects, stated, “This is a wonderful opportunity for the Queens community to come together and to help one another weather the economic storm. A superb program has been planned to provide information on services of various agencies, as well as practical applications for networking, retooling, and other skills for succeeding in our economy.”
Michael Rosner, Director of the Job Board, declared, “The OU Job Board and the Department of Community Services are pleased to join together and to pool our resources to help those who are struggling navigate the road out of financial troubles. By providing community members with information on the services available to them, we hope to improve many individuals’ and families’ quality of life. The job strategies that we will present including a resume tune-up will change people’s lives forever.”
Participants will learn about agency services available for individuals and families, and will meet one-on-one with agency representatives; attend workshops to learn how to increase employable skills; develop networking opportunities; and learn practical tips and suggestions to finding a job and to retool marketable skills.

• How to Market Yourself: What’s Working in Today’s Turbulent Job Market, with Ethan Chazin, Consultant, The Chazin Group;
• How to Optimize Your Interviewing Skills, with Alex Freund, Career Counselor;
• How to Network Effectively in Today’s Marketplace followed by “Speed Networking Session,” with Lisa Futterman, Director, Employment Services; Lisa Soderburg, Career Coordinator; and Carla Visser, Career Coordinator, FEGS;
• Tune-Up Your Resume in 15 Minutes – Change Your Life Forever (participants should bring their resumes for this session. Additional registration is required, at www.oujobs.org);
• The Credit Card and Mortgage Crunch: Practical Solutions and Remedies, with David Siegel, Attorney, Law Offices of David Siegel.
10:30am-11:30 am Participants may choose one workshop from the list below:
• How to Market Yourself: What’s Working in Today’s Turbulent Job Market with Ethan Chazin;
• Job Search Strategies for the Mature Worker: Retraining, Retooling and Finding Employment with Meryl Kordower, Associate Vice President, FEGS;
• Transferable Skills: Identify and Harness Your Portable Talents That Employers Want! With Beth Laster, Jewish Queens United for Employment (JQUE);
• How to Network Effectively in Today’s Marketplace followed by “Speed Networking Session,” with Lisa Futterman, Lisa Soderburg, and Carla Visser;
• Tune Up Your Resume in 15 Minutes – Change Your Life Forever.
After the workshops conclude, there will be a panel discussion from 11:40 a.m.-12:30 p.m., “Get Questions Answered and Learn of Services Available for Your Family.” Mr. Buchweitz will moderate the session, and Mr. Rosner will serve as one of the featured panelists.
