The Orthodox Union joins the entire Jewish world in mourning the loss of the former Sephardic Chief Rabbi of Israel, Rabbi Eliyahu Bakshi-Doron zt”l. Rabbi Bakshi-Doron served as Sephardic Chief Rabbi from 1993-2003.

“Rabbi Bakshi-Doron was a tremendous talmid chacham (Torah scholar) and was marked by his extraordinary erudition, humility and his generosity of spirit. His seforim, Binyan Av, were magnificent works both in terms of its scholarship and beauty of its language. In the introduction to the sefer, Rav Ovadia Yosef urged him to publish his wonderful Torah insights,” said OU Kosher CEO Rabbi Menachem Genack. “He brought high-level Torah learning to the forefront in many communities including in South America.”
