This Chanukah, as Jewish boys and girls recount the inspirational stories of upstanding role models who stood up for their beliefs, a lunchbreak webinar for parents, “How to Teach Your Child to be an Upstander,” will be sponsored by the Orthodox Union Department of Community Engagement, together with ChallahCrumbs.com, and ParentingSimply.com. The program will be webcast on Wednesday, November 20 at 12 p.m. Eastern Standard Time and will feature Adina Soclof, MS. CCC-SLP and founder of ParentingSimply.com; and Devorah Levine-Katz, MSW, a renowned educator. Through this presentation, parents will be given the opportunity to learn how they can instill leadership skills and middot in their children.
An “upstander,” according to Hannah Farkas, Program Manager of the Department of Community Engagement, “is one who has good middot (traits) and stands up for his or her beliefs.” The term “upstander” was created by the weekend presenters, she said. “This program will provide tools for parents to relay proper middot to their children, important skills for all children to learn.”
In addition to writing for ParentingSimply.com and ChallahCrumbs.com, Adina Soclof is the Director of Parent Outreach for A+ Solutions and facilitates “How to Talk So Kids Will Listen and Listen So Kids Will Talk,” as well as workshops based on “Siblings Without Rivalry.”
Devorah Levine-Katz, mother of five, is an experienced formal and informal educator and has developed curricula for schools and summer programs. Her passion lies with making Judaism accessible and exciting for Jewish families everywhere.
