Bruriah and Ma’ayanot, two New Jersey-area Jewish girls’ schools, sent students on NCSY missions to help New Orleans Area Habitat for Humanity (NOAHH) put finishing touches on homes still being restored from damage caused by Hurricane Katrina. Mission chaperones included school faculty, alumnae, and NCSY staff, including New Jersey NCSY Regional Director Rabbi Ethan Katz.

The mission also included volunteer work with Green Light New Orleans, replacing older incandescent light bulbs in underprivileged homes with more energy-efficient models.

Sandy Nussbaum (Bruriah, class of 2020) said that the experience “has given me the opportunity to step out of my comfort zone and make a difference in the lives of those around me.” Eliora Kruman, a junior at Ma’ayanot said, “It reminded me of what was important … We did something greater than ourselves.”
