The OU Department of Community Services is offering a special presentation, “Empowering Success as a Single Parent,” led by Rachel Pill, L.C.S.W. The event, co-sponsored by the Young Israel of Flatbush, will take place Saturday, January 7 at 7:30 pm at the synagogue, 1012 Avenue I. The event is in partnership with Sister to Sister, a Brooklyn-based support network for Jewish single mothers.

Topics will include the many roles of a single parent, strategies for effective parenting in the best interest of the children, developing time for yourself while juggling a busy schedule, dating again, and more. The event is geared for single parents, both men and women, but is open to all, with free admission. (Advance registration is encouraged.) Renowned speaker and best-selling author Rabbi Dovid Goldwasser will visit Congregation Ahavas Achim in Highland Park, NJ as scholar-in-residence for parshas Vayechi (January 13-14) as part of the Department of Community Services‘ Scholar-in-Residence Program. New Jersey NCSY will present “Teens and Spirituality: New Approaches for a New Generation” on Sunday, January 8, from 7:00-10:00 pm at Congregation Bnai Yeshurun in Teaneck. Through a series of sessions given by rabbis and educators from local shuls and high schools, the program will address contemporary issues with spirituality experienced by teens within the modern Orthodox community. These include such topics as “Making Shabbat Meaningful to a 21st Century Teenager” and “What is Your Teenager Saying to God?” Featured speakers include International Director of NCSY and OU Managing Director Rabbi Steven Burg; New Jersey NCSY Regional Director Rabbi Yaakov Glasser; Rabbi Dr. Jonathan Rosenblatt, Senior Rabbi at Riverdale Jewish Center; Rabbi Eliezer E. Rubin, Principal of Rae Kushner Yeshiva High and Joseph Kushner Hebrew Academy Middle School; and many other notable participants. The OU, AFIKIM Foundation, Saw You At Sinai, NCYI and YU Connects jointly present a breathtaking Art Exhibit and Interactive Discussion with gifted artist Stan Lebovic for singles ages 23-34. The program will take place on January 15, 2012 at the Young Israel of Jamaica Estates Ballroom, 83-10 188 St. in Jamaica Estates. The program begins with an exhibit viewing at 7:30 pm.
