OU’s Stephen J. Savitsky to Address Jewish Philanthropy Workshop, 6/3 in Ottawa

24 May 2013

ORTHODOX UNION BOARD CHAIR STEPHEN J. SAVITSKY TO DELIVER PLENARY ADDRESS IN OTTAWA AT JEWISH PHILANTHROPY WORKSHOP, AS PART OF AFP INCLUSIVE GIVING PROJECT, JUNE 3

Orthodox Union Chairman of the Board Stephen J. Savitsky will be the plenary speaker when the AFP Foundation for Philanthropy of Canada presents a one-day Jewish Philanthropy Workshop on Monday, June 3 in Ottawa. The workshop, which is intended for a general audience from the Ottawa area, will use Jewish fund-raising expertise as a guide for “donors of every faith, race, and ethnicity,” according to the conference’s promotional materials.

The conference is part of the AFP’s Inclusive Giving Project, which focuses on highlighting the philanthropic traditions of diverse communities in Ontario. It is funded by the Ontario government, through of Ministry of Citizenship and Immigration, and chaired by Ontario’s Lieutenant Governor, the Honourable David C. Onley.

Mr. Savitsky declared, “I am honored they chose an Orthodox Jew to deliver this important message to the Ontario philanthropic community. Clearly, Torah values play a significant role in the prominence of Jews in the field of charity. I look forward to attending this milestone event.”

According to conference planners, participants will learn to “understand the giving trends and interests of the Jewish community; develop inclusive relationship-building strategies; and speak to critical issues and build strong cases for support within the Jewish community.” Emphasis will be placed “on next generation Jewish philanthropy, connection and philanthropy, and big town versus small town Jewish philanthropy.”

In an interesting twist, the workshop will close when Justin Poy, the Chair of the Chinese Philanthropy Advisory Committee of the Inclusive Giving Project, will comment on “the synergies and differences between Chinese and Jewish philanthropy.”
