ORTHODOX UNION STATEMENT ON TODAY’S ELECTION OF RABBIS DAVID LAU AND YITZHAK YOSEF TO POSITION OF CHIEF RABBIS OF ISRAEL

The Orthodox Union greets today’s election of Rabbi David Lau and Rabbi Yitzhak Yosef to the positions of Chief Ashkenazic and Chief Sephardic Rabbis of the State of Israel with words of congratulations and encouragement. The Orthodox Union has always enjoyed a close working relationship with the Israeli Chief Rabbinate. Former Chief Rabbis have frequently graced us at our national conventions and have addressed us on numerous occasions.

We wish both Chief Rabbis well, and express our willingness to cooperate closely with them as they strive to educate all of our people in the essential values of our Torah. We are confident that they will bring their considerable talents to bear on resolving the pressing problems which confront our people. We pray that they are successful in healing the divisiveness from which we suffer. We look forward to their tenure with great hope and eagerly anticipate working closely with both of them in achieving the glorious visions of peace, brotherhood and authentic spirituality which were set forward by our prophets. We pray that the Almighty will illuminate their path with His light and inspire them with His truth.
