Benefit Concert for Orly Ohayon in Israel Set for Tuesday, September 24 at Great Synagogue

23 Sep 2013

BENEFIT CONCERT FOR ORLY OHAYON IN ISRAEL SET FOR TUESDAY, SEPTEMBER 24 AT GREAT SYNAGOGUE IN JERUSALEM; GIRL WAS SERIOUSLY INJURED AND MOTHER KILLED BY DRIVER WHEN WALKING TO KOL NIDRE SERVICES IN JACKSONVILLE, FLORIDA

A group of NCSY alumni in Israel during Sukkot will present a Chol Hamoed Concert for the Orly Ohayon Fund, Tuesday, September 24 at 5:30 p.m. at the Jerusalem Great Synagogue Courtyard, 56 King George Street.

On their way to Kol Nidre services in her hometown of Jacksonville, Florida, Orly and her mother, Esther, were struck by a car, with Esther being killed and Orly severely injured. Southern NCSY, based in Boca Raton, FL has begun a fund-raising campaign on behalf of the orphaned Orly, whose father died several years ago. Orly is an NCSYer, and participated in the Michlelet program for girls in Israel this summer, where she impressed everyone with her devotion to Jewish learning and Israel.

Now, the campaign spreads to Israel, with the benefit concert, which will feature Lenny Solomon, Naftali Abramson, Shlomo Katz, Aryeh Kunstler, and other special guests. The musicians are a comglomeration of genres, ranging from Carlebach to modern Jewish music. The minimum donation is 30NIS, equivalent to about $8.

“The driving force behind this concert is that we all care,” declared Malkie Krieger, a member of the group that is putting together the concert, although she is not in Israel and is working from New York. The original idea came from Samantha Hyman, a Southern NCSY advisor.

“We wanted to do something real and tangible both to raise money for Orly, as well as to mirror her infectious joy and the happiness she brings in this world,” explained Malkie Krieger. “We thought a concert, bringing together Jews from all walks of life who are in Israel for Sukkot, or for a longer period, would be an ideal way to raise money for the Orly Ohayon Benefit Fund.”
