Marilyn Monroe’s Personal Siddur Up for Auction

22 Oct 2018
News

Next month, Marilyn Monroe’s personal siddur will be put up for auction in Cedarhurst, NY, by J. Greenstein & Co. The starting bid is $4,600.

The cream-colored siddur was published in 1922. Monroe was converted to Judaism in 1956 by Rabbi Robert Goldburg of Congregation Mishkan Israel in New Haven, CT, in anticipation of her marriage to writer Arthur Miller. The couple divorced five years later but, according to Goldburg, Monroe remained committed to being Jewish.

The siddur contains marginal notes inscribed by Monroe, including directions to herself to append the word “emes” to the end of Shema and to skip the bracha on tzitzis found among the morning brachos (pictured).
