News

Guatemala has announced plans to move its embassy from Tel Aviv to Jerusalem on May 16, two days after the US relocates its embassy.

The announcement was posted on Jerusalem Mayor Nir Barkat’s Facebook page. Barkat met with Guatemala’s ambassador to Israel, Sarah Solis Castaneda, and the CEO of the Guatemalan Foreign Ministry, Maria Lucia Ramirez, to discuss operations for the move.

Guatemalan President Jimmy Morales had announced at the annual AIPAC conference in Washington, DC, that Guatemala would move its embassy to Jerusalem for the second time. Guatemala recognized Israel after it declared independence in 1948 and was the first country to establish an embassy in Jerusalem in 1959, before later relocating it to Tel Aviv.
