Mr. and Mrs. Franklyn Snitow to be Honored at the
OU National Anniversary Dinner

Rosalyn and Franklyn Snitow will be honored by the Orthodox Union with its National Distinguished Leadership Award for their long-standing commitment to community service and their contributions to Jewish life, at the OU’s 103rd Anniversary National Dinner on Sunday, May 20, 2001, at the Grand Hyatt Hotel in New York.

Franklyn and Rosalyn Snitow were both raised in Queens, New York.  They currently reside in Forest Hills, New York where they are members of the Queens Jewish Center.

Mrs. Snitow received her Bachelor’s Degree from Queens College and her Master’s in education from Boston University.  After several years of teaching in the New York public school system, Mrs. Snitow has dedicated her life to raising their three children and to doing communal and charitable work.

Mr. Snitow is an attorney practicing with the law firm of Snitow & Cunningham, LLP.   Prior to entering private practice, he was an Assistant District Attorney in the Rackets Bureau of the New York County District Attorney’s Office under District Attorneys Frank S. Hogan and Robert M. Morgenthau.  Mr. Snitow has successfully argued landmark cases before the United States Supreme Court and federal and state appellate courts.  During the 1990s, he served as the lead attorney in the federal civil rights class action suit filed by the Chassidic Jewish residents of Crown Heights against the City of New York for damages sustained during the anti-Semitic violence in Crown Heights in 1991.  Mr. Snitow and his firm have regularly represented Jewish communal and educational institutions (such as Touro College), state and municipal governments, and elected officials, in employment-related civil litigation in both state and federal courts.

The Snitows are also committed to charitable and community affairs.  Mrs. Snitow is an active member of the Queens Jewish Center Sisterhood and Mr. Snitow has served as the chairman of its board of trustees for the last few years.  In addition, Mr. Snitow is the president of Bris Avraham, has served as a member of the executive board of the Orthodox Union and is now a vice president of the OU.

The Snitow’s have three children: Alyson, Gary and Emily. Alyson is married to Ari Walfish, and they have two children, Avi and Uri.

“Throughout their lives, the Snitows have personified the ideals of tikkun olam  (repairing the world),” said OU President Harvey Blitz.  “We are proud to honor their selfless devotion to the greater community and to klal Yisrael.”

Other honorees at the Union’s Anniversary Dinner include: Rabbi Kenneth Hain; Rabbi Abraham Cooper; and Naomi and Harvey Wolinetz.
