New Jersey Residents to be Honored at Annual Yachad Dinner
The Orthodox Union's (OU) National
Jewish Council for the Disabled
(NJCD) will honor Sally and Joel Cohen with the Annual Our Way Award at
the NJCD
dinner, Monday, December 4, in Manhattan.
The NJCD is proud to honor the
Cohens for their tireless efforts and ongoing support of the deaf and
hearing-impaired. As a deaf couple, they have overcome many challenges,
making numerous contributions to both the deaf and hearing worlds. They
have consistently demonstrated an untiring commitment and exceptional
dedication to working on behalf of others.
This Our Way Award is also an
opportunity to honor the memory of Joel's father, Rabbi Herschel Cohen.
Rabbi Cohen was a lone voice working to educate and raise awareness
about those with disabilities, pioneering the inclusion of all children
within the Jewish community.
The Cohen's have shown
extraordinary commitment to working on behalf of Jewish deaf throughout
the state of New Jersey. Sally Cohen has been active for over 20
years as a member and co-chair of the Livingston Advisory Committee on
the Handicapped. Both she and Joel are founders of, and deeply involved
with, the Jewish Deaf and Hearing Impaired Council; she as president and
he as treasurer. The Cohens also volunteer on behalf of UJA's MetroWest
Super Sunday to call deaf Jewish people from their TTY to solicit
contributions. In their extensive friendship with NJCD, Sally and Joel
Cohen have been staunch supporters and regular attendees of Our Way
programs. They have been particularly active with the Our Way Deaf
Adult Learning Program, serving as advisors, planners and hosts. They
have opened their home to host many successful Our Way summer
picnics.
OU President Mandell I. Ganchrow,
M.D., explained, "The success of Our
Way is largely reliant on the participation and support of its
members. Sally and Joel Cohen's tremendous role in advocating for
support for the deaf and dedicating their time to the cause through
their love and commitment to the deaf community, is
inspirational."
With more than 35 chapters
throughout the United States and Canada, the NJCD, an agency of the
Orthodox Union, is the only national resource center providing
specialized guidance and information as well as direct services to those
in the Jewish community who have special needs. Yachad, a division of
the NJCD, provides a wide range of social, recreational and religious
programs, serving well over 1,500 children and adults with developmental
disabilities.
Established in 1969, Our Way is
the only Jewish movement reaching out to the deaf and hearing impaired
across the country and bridging the gap between the hearing and
non-hearing worlds. Through a vast array of programs including
Shabbatonim, holiday celebrations, a deaf singles registry, Torah study
groups, summer tours, family retreats, conventions and special signing
publications, Our Way provides spiritual and social opportunities for
nearly 1,000 deaf across the country.
The
Orthodox Union, now in its second century of service to the Jewish
community of America and beyond, is the world leader in youth
work,
advocacy for the disabled, synagogue
services, adult education and
political action. Its kosher
supervision label, the
,
is the worlds most recognized kosher symbol and can be found on over
250,000 products in 68 countries around the globe.
