Parenting 101:
Orthodox Union Series on Family Relationships Takes to the Road

With Mother’s Day and Father’s Day rapidly approaching, the Orthodox Union is continuing its ongoing series of nationwide seminars on Jewish parenting and the strengthening of family relationships.

The aim of the series is to maximize the potential of the Jewish family by building upon and enhancing the structure that already exists.  In a community where the family is so highly valued, Orthodox experts in the field of family relationships have much to offer in terms of advice, practical ideas, pointers, suggestions and skills that can help prevent future problems.

The month of May will feature several local programs, the first of which will be held at the Young Israel of West Hartford, 2240 Albany Avenue, West Hartford, Connecticut on Saturday, May 6th at 10:45 AM and will feature scholar-in residence, Barry Holzer, M.D.  He will discuss: Instilling Moral Values in a Secular Society; Adam and Eve in the 21st Century: Insights into the Tree of Knowledge; and Achieving Healthy Relationships in an Open Society.

The second lecture series will take place at the Young Israel of Jamaica Estates, 83-10 188th Street, Queens, New York on Sunday, May 7th at 7:15 PM.  The theme will be Helping Our Children Becomes Mentches.  The speakers will include: Rabbi Herschel Schachter on the topic of The Teaching of Middot and Ethics to Our Children; Dr. Norman Blumenthal on Teenage Challenges and Changes; and Dr. Rona Novick on  Setting Healthy Limits Before the Teen Years.

The next lecture will be held at the Riverdale Jewish Center, 3700 Independence Avenue, Riverdale, New York on  Saturday, May 13th at 11:15 AM.  Scholar-in-Residence Dr. Norman Blumenthal will speak about:  Merging Discipline and Love: Raising a Wholesome Family; At Peace With Oneself While Sharing a Life With Someone Else: The Challenge; and Paradox of Marriage and A Rebellion Underfoot? Orthodox Teens Today.

The following day a lecture will take place at Yavneh Academy, 155 N. Fairview Avenue, Paramus, New Jersey on Sunday, May 14th at 9:00 AM. The speakers will include:  Dr. Aviva Biberfeld who will speak about Setting Healthy Limits in Pre-School and Early Grades; Dr. Norman Blumenthal who will speak about Teenage Challenges and Changes; Dr. Jeffrey Lichtman who will speak about Effective Discipline Techniques; and Dr. Rona Novick who will discuss Handling Homework Hassles Successfully.

Sunday May 21st will include 2 separate programs.  One will be held at The Etz Chaim Synagogue, 10167 San Jose Boulevard, Jacksonville, Florida at 11:00 AM, where Rebbetzin Rookie Billet will speak about Understanding the War Zone: The Challenges of the Jewish Family.

The second lecture will take place at The Young Israel of Spring Valley, 23 Union Road, Spring Valley, New York at 7:45 PM where Rabbi Eliyahu Safran will speak about Strengthening Family Relationships.

The parenting seminars are an Orthodox Union community project, coordinated by the Department of Synagogue Services with the support of the Rabbinical Council of America.

The Orthodox Union, now in its second century of service to the Jewish community of America and beyond, is the world leader in youth work, advocacy for the disabled, synagogue services, adult education and political action.  Its kosher supervision label,  the OU, is the world’s most recognized kosher symbol and can be found on over 250,000 products in 68 countries around the globe.
