Not Hearing, Yet Still Believing:
Our Way Convention for the Deaf and Hearing Impaired

Imagine being deaf and constantly feeling like you were different from your peers.  Now imagine finding a place where you could meet contemporaries who were dealing with the same issues you were, where everyone was Jewish and everyone was either deaf or hearing impaired.  The Orthodox Union’s annual Our Way National Convention on May 25-28th at Beth Avrohom Yoseph of Toronto Congregation in Toronto, Canada, will do exactly that.

The convention will provide an opportunity for the Jewish deaf to come together socially during a three-day weekend. Participants will celebrate the Sabbath as a group, attend workshops, dine together, and take several trips including a visit to the CN Tower and a ride on the “Maid-of-the-Mist” at Niagara Falls.

The Convention provides an opportunity for the Jewish deaf to discuss the issues they deal with on a daily basis as well as a special forum in which to interact with others.  One of the guest speakers at the Convention will be Justine Klein.  Ms. Klein has the unique distinction of being the only Jewish deaf person from New Mexico.  She will discuss the challenges of being deaf while trying to remain faithful to her Judaism despite the pressures of the surrounding religious sects.

Established in 1969, Our Way is the only Jewish movement reaching out to the deaf and hearing impaired across the country and bridging the gap between the hearing and non-hearing worlds. Through a vast array of programs including Shabbatonim, holiday celebrations, a deaf singles registry, Torah study groups, summer tours, family retreats, conventions and special signing publications, Our Way provides spiritual and social opportunities for nearly 1,000 deaf across the country.

The Orthodox Union, now in its second century of service to the Jewish community of America and beyond, is the world leader in youth work, advocacy for the disabled, synagogue services, adult education and political action.  Its kosher supervision label,  the OU Symbol, is the world’s most recognized kosher symbol and can be found on over 250,000 products in 68 countries around the globe.
