Esther and Harry Walker of  Lawrence, NY
To Be Honored For Contributions to Jewish Life

Esther and Harry Walker will be honored by the Orthodox Union with its National Distinguished Leadership Award for their long-standing commitment to community service and their contributions to Jewish life at the organization’s 102nd Anniversary National Dinner on Sunday, May 21, 2000, at the Grand Hyatt Hotel in New York.

Acknowledged as a legendary entrepreneur, Harry Walker has – over the last 53 years – built the most successful agency in the world for celebrity speakers. He represents an extensive list of world leaders, noted politicians and news media personalities and has been actively involved in hasbarah – creating the proper image for Israel – since its emergence as a Jewish state.

Both Mr. and Mrs. Walker have long been actively involved in Jewish communal causes. Currently, Mr. Walker serves on the board of Beth Midrash Govoha of Lakewood, NJ and the Orthodox Union.  He has been honored by numerous national Jewish organizations – including Hebrew Academy for Special Children (HASC), Torah Academy for Girls in Far Rockaway, Yeshiva Darchei Torah and Torah U’ Mesorah – for his dedication to tikkun olam.   A life member of Emunah, AMIT, and Hadassah, Mrs. Walker has been honored by the Bikur Cholim of Flatbush and the Beth Medrash Govoha of Lakewood Women’s League.

“Together, the Walkers have built a life that is based on the values of the Torah – with a commitment to family and community at its center,”  said Mandell I. Ganchrow, M.D., President of the Orthodox Union.  “We are extremely proud to honor the couple for their decades of service to the Union and the greater Jewish community.”

Mr. and Mrs. Walker are proud parents and grandparents whose children are deeply involved in learning – both in Israel and in the Lakewood Kollel.   Their son in-law, Rabbi Mendel Goldberg, is a Rosh Kollel (Head) of Yeshiva Darchei Torah and gives a shiur (Torah class) at the Agudas Yisroel of West Lawrence.  Their oldest daughter, Rebbetzin Yehudis Samet, is the author of the Artscroll bestseller, The Other Side of the Story.

Other honorees at the Union’s Anniversary Dinner include: Rabbi Jacob J. Schacter of the Jewish Center in New York, Dr. Hedy and Terrence Augenbraun, and Jean and Marvin Staiman.  Union President Mandell I. Ganchrow, M.D., will be presented with the organization’s Keter Shem Tov Award for his years of distinguished leadership.
