and Marvin Staiman
of Williamsport, PA
To Be Honored For Contributions to Jewish Life
Jean
and Marvin Staiman will be honored by the Orthodox
Union with its Presidents Award for their long-standing
commitment to community service and their contributions to Jewish life
at the organizations 102nd
Anniversary National Dinner on Sunday, May 21, 2000, at the Grand
Hyatt Hotel in New York.
Mr.
and Mrs. Staiman have been committed to community service for more than
four decades. Their extensive civic involvement includes participation
in local business, social service, arts and sports organizations as well
as area synagogues and local and national Jewish organizations.
Chairman
of the Board of Staiman Brothers Inc. his family's 100-year-old
scrap processing and recycling business Mr. Staiman is actively
involved in his home city of Williamsport, PA.
A former president of the Greater Williamsport Chamber of
Commerce, Mr. Staiman helped create the five-county Susquehanna Council
to serve the youth of the region. He has
been active in health, educational, recreational and religious
organizations throughout Lycoming County and has been recognized by many
of these agencies for his years of service to the citizens of
Williamsport. Currently, Mr. Staiman serves as ritual chairperson for
the Ohev Sholom Congregation, where he is also a past president.
Mrs.
Staiman was employed at Staiman Brothers Inc. for 22 years all the
while serving on the boards and committees of countless community
organizations. Her distinguished record of volunteer service includes
positions as past president and current board member of Crittenton
Services (an agency that helps unwed mothers), vice-chair of the Family
Life Institute of North Central Pennsylvania, past president of
Williamsport Hadassah and national board member for the organization,
secretary of the Lycoming United Way and past president of the
Congregation Ohev Sholom sisterhood.
A
noted speaker on the issues of family life in Judaism, Mrs. Staiman is
often called upon to address Jewish and other religious groups. She
currently serves as vice president of the Williamsport Symphony and as
membership chair for Congregation Ohev Sholom. Mrs. Staiman has also
received numerous awards for her dedication and service to the
community.
Together,
the Staimans have been actively involved in Israel Bonds and the
development of the U.S. Holocaust Memorial Museum in Washington, DC.
They have also worked on behalf the Anti-Defamation League of B'nai
B'rith and Yeshiva Beth Moshe of Scranton.
Mr.
and Mrs. Staiman are parents of six children, grandparents of 14 and
great grandparents of one.
Throughout
their life together, the Staimans have personified the ideals of tikkun
olam (repairing the
world), said Mandell I. Ganchrow, M.D., President of the Union. We are proud to honor their selfless devotion to their
greater community and to klal Yisrael.
Other
honorees at the Unions Anniversary Dinner will include: Rabbi
Jacob J. Schacter of the Jewish Center in New York, Dr.
Hedy and Terrence Augenbraun, and
Esther and Harry Walker.
Union President Mandell I. Ganchrow, M.D.
will be presented with the organizations Keter Shem Tov Award for his
years of distinguished leadership.
