President Mandell I. Ganchrow, M.D. of Monsey, NY
To Be Honored For Years of Distinguished Leadership
Mandell
Mendy Ganchrow, M.D., President of the Orthodox
Union will be honored by the organization with its Keter Shem Tov
Award for his years of distinguished leadership at the Unions 102nd
Anniversary National Dinner on Sunday, May 21, 2000, at the Grand
Hyatt Hotel in New York
As
Union president for the last six years, Dr. Ganchrow has presided over a
period of unprecedented growth. Under his leadership, the Union has seen
the dramatic expansion of Torah initiatives, synagogue services and
Israel-related educational and political activities.
A
retired surgeon and former clinical associate professor of surgery, Dr.
Ganchrow has held countless leadership positions within the organized
Jewish community of the United States. His involvement in Jewish
communal affairs has enabled him to project the beauty
of the Torah way of life into the oft-times secular halls of world
leadership. Most recently, Dr. Ganchrow was appointed as a Commissioner
to the U.S. Commission for the Preservation of Americas Heritage
Abroad.
A
graduate of Yeshiva University, Dr. Ganchrow served with distinction as
a combat surgeon and acting Jewish chaplain in Vietnam; he was decorated
and promoted on the battlefield to the rank of
major. Dr. Ganchrow is a
member of the Boards of Rabbi Isaac Elchanon Theological Seminary and
Touro Womens College, a member of the executive board of American
Israel Public Affairs Committee (AIPAC), and represents the Orthodox
Union in the Conference of Presidents of Major American Jewish
Organizations. He was the
founding chairman of the Unions Institute for Public Affairs and
served for 13 years as the founding president of the Hudson Valley
Political Action Committee, then the largest local pro-Israeli PAC in
the U.S. Dr. Ganchrow has
also been president of the Community Synagogue of Monsey and the Adolph
Schreiber Hebrew Academy of Monsey.
He is a member of the Governing Board of the Jewish Agency, past
chairman of the Doctors Division of Israel Bonds of Rockland County,
and represents the Union as a member of the board of trustees of the
Memorial Foundation for Jewish Culture.
Since
he first took office, in 1994, Dr. Ganchrows extensive travels and
his ease in dealing with government leaders at the state, federal and
international levels has increased the Unions exposure and enhanced
its prestige on the world stage, said Marcel Weber, Chairman of the
Unions Board of Directors. Mendys hands-on style and his passionate efforts on
behalf of world Jewry both enliven and inspire the entire Union family.
We are proud to honor Mendy for his dedication to serving klal
Yisrael and his years of outstanding accomplishments in furthering Torah
Judaism in America and around the world.
Other
honorees at the Unions Anniversary Dinner include: Dr. Hedy and
Terrence Augenbraun, Rabbi Jacob J. Schacter of the Jewish Center in New
York, Jean and Marvin Staiman, and Esther and Harry
Walker.
