ASK OU Heads to Lakewood
Some 400 people attended a recent
seminar on kashrut given by the Orthodox
Union (OU) in Lakewood, NJ. The seminar had several goals: to
help forge a more active relationship between the OU and the Lakewood
community, to provide insight into the OU kashrut operation, and to draw
future hires from the Lakewood community.
The speakers included Rabbis Menachem Genack,
Yisroel Belsky, Moshe Elefant, Yaakov Luban, Nachum Katz, Yehuda Kravitz,
Moshe Perlmutter and Yaakov Forchheimer (the Lakewood posek). Topics
covered included: kashrut in medicine; Bishul Akum; a global view of the
OU and its relationship with other certification agencies; ritual
slaughter in America today; and career opportunities in the world of
kashrut. A question and
answer period followed.
Rabbi Yosef Grossman, co-chairman of the seminar,
explained, "The OU is extremely interested in developing a
relationship with the Lakewood community. This year alone,
forty-seven of our new kashrut employees came from Lakewood."
OU employee and Lakewood resident Rabbi David Rockove explained, "The
general consensus in Lakewood is one of respect and appreciation for the
way the OU expertly handles the complex field of contemporary kashrut.
I expect that this new relationship will provide wonderful new
opportunities for the community as well as the OU."
