Honoring
the Past, the Present and the Future
Monsey Resident To Be Inducted into the OUs
Ben Zakkai Honor Society
The Orthodox Union is
pleased to honor long-time affiliate of the Orthodox Unions (OU) National
Conference of Synagogue Youth (NSCY), Rabbi Yaacov Haber, by
inducting him into the Ben Zakkai Honor Society at the annual Ben
Zakkai Dinner, Sunday, December 10, in Manhattan.
Over
30 years ago, a junior NCSYer in the Buffalo chapter was inspired to
leave his hometown and travel to yeshiva high school. The journey that
began in the Bonaich chapter eventually took him to one of the world's
finest Yeshivot in Israel, to challenging Torah education positions on
different sides of the globe and to distinguished rabbinic and Orthodox
Union leadership roles.
Rabbi
Haber is the National Director of Jewish Education for the Orthodox
Union and is well known as the founder and motivational force behind the
OU's Pardes Program. Rabbi Haber
was ordained in Jerusalem by Rabbi Chaim Pinchas Scheinberg of Yeshiva
Torah Ore and by Chacham Avrohom Ochana of Yeshiva Ahavat Shalom.
After
his ordination in Israel, Rabbi Haber returned to his hometown of
Buffalo in 1979, with his family to found the Torah Center of Buffalo.
During his 10 years there he served as spiritual leader, first of
the Amherst Synagogue and later at the Saranac Synagogue.
From
there, Rabbi Haber moved to Melbourne, Australia, where he founded the
Australian Institute of Torah, an adult education program that ran in
almost every synagogue in Australia and was attended by thousands of men
and women.
Rabbi
Haber is also the spiritual leader of the Bais
Torah Congregation in Monsey, where he succeeds Rabbi Berel Wein in
leading one of North America's most dynamic congregations.
The
author of Reachings --
Talks on Torah and Critical Issues for Jews of Today,
hundreds of his shiurim are in circulation around the world on
the Internet, in print and on cassette
tape. A sought after lecturer and speaker, Rabbi Haber has been
instrumental in forming numerous learning programs throughout the U.S.,
Canada and Australia. His
easy listening approach to teaching Judaism to men and women from all
walks of life has been widely acclaimed.
OU
President Mandell I. Ganchrow, M.D., explained, Rabbi Haber
has been a tremendous asset to the entire OU and NCSY family.
Whether he is gracing us with his inspiring words or his
infectious smile, the lessons he conveys touch the lives of everyone he
meets. It is a particular
honor for us to honor Rabbi Haber by inducting him into the Ben Zakkai
Honor Society.
Since it was founded in
1954, NCSY has pioneered the
Jewish outreach movement and today is the worlds largest Jewish youth
program. With chapters in
39 states, 215 communities across the nation and 3 Canadian provinces,
NCSY reaches 40,000 boys and girls annually by offering 750 major
educational events and programs and 10 summer camps in the U.S.,
Israel and the Ukraine.
When the Ben Zakkai
Honor Society was created in 1965, its mandate was to honor those
exceptional men and women who have demonstrated personal Torah growth
and the promise of future meaningful service to the Jewish people and
the Orthodox community. Rabbi Yaacov Haber has lived up to that mandate and
epitomizes those very qualities.
The
Orthodox Union, now in its second century of service to the Jewish
community of America and beyond, is the world leader in youth
work,
advocacy for the disabled, synagogue
services, adult education and
political action. Its kosher
supervision label, the
,
is the worlds most recognized kosher symbol and can be found on over
250,000 products in 68 countries around the globe.
