Publish Transliterated Yom Kippur Prayer Book
When Yom Kippur (the Day of Atonement) begins at
sundown on Sunday, September 19, synagogues around the world will be filled with
worshippers, many of whom cannot read Hebrew. Unable to chant along with the congregation,
these individuals have only been able to experience communal prayer as silent spectators
--even on the holiest day of the Jewish year. But this Yom Kippur, they will be
able to join their congregation in reciting the ancient liturgy with the help of the new
Seif Edition ArtScroll Transliterated Linear
Machzor (High Holy Day prayer book) from the Orthodox Union (OU) and
Mesorah Publications, Ltd.
This unique machzor, includes both a linear translation and a
full transliteration of the Hebrew text. Detailed explanations and commentaries accompany
the prayers and make the machzor a helpful resource for anyone who wants to learn
more about the significance of the holiest day on the Jewish calendar, as well as the
background and meaning of the services. The Yom Kippur machzor is the third in a
series (sponsored by Heshe and Harriet Seif). The first two prayer books in the series -- for Shabbat and Festivals, and Weekday services
-- are also available from ArtScroll.
"The line-by-line transliterated and translated Hebrew page is
designed to make prayer accessible and meaningful for those who cannot read the
language," said Rabbi Raphael B. Butler, Executive Vice President of the OU.
"This machzor enables every worshipper to join the congregation in the fullest
sense of the word, as a participant, not as a spectator, stranger or outsider."
In the Jewish calendar, Rosh Hashanah marks the start of the
new year and begins an intense process of self-reflection and repent. Ten days later, the
"High Holy Days" culminate with Yom
Kippur, which is observed with fasting and prayer to atone for past sins
and ask for the blessings of forgiveness and good fortune in the year to come.
From now until Yom Kippur, the Machzor is available in hard cover for $24.99. After the
Holy Day, the cost will be $29.99. A leather bound version is also available -- in
alligator or maroon -- for $44.99. To order, please call 212-613-8297.
The Orthodox Union, celebrating 100 years of service to the Jewish
