NJCD Commends
"Business with a Heart"

The National Jewish Council for the Disabled (NJCD) recently paid tribute to the SLK Mortgage Company in Teaneck, NJ, for its unique dedication to diversity. During the ceremony, the NJCD presented Yehuda Kohn, President of SKL Mortgage Company, with the First Annual Employer of the Year Award and David Schwartz, a developmentally disabled employee of Mr. Kohen, with the First Annual Employee of the Year Award.

"The NJCD applauds businesses that put people first and pursue purposes beyond profits," said Dr. Jeff Lichtman, National Director of the NJCD stated, "Hopefully, through their example, employing individuals with developmental disabilities and other challenges will become a norm for businesses everywhere."

Dedicated to mainstreaming individuals with disabilities into the full spectrum of community life, the NJCD offers an award-winning vocational resources and job placement program. Since its inception in 1997, the vocational program has placed disabled employees in businesses including food manufacturers, retail establishments, elementary schools, non-profit organizations and laboratories.

"There are thousands of disabled individuals throughout the country who have completed school and who are sitting home, with nothing productive to do with their time. These people are employable. But it takes a business such as SLK Mortgage to provide the opportunity," said Dr. Lichtman.

The NJCD is sponsored by the Orthodox Union (OU).

The Orthodox Union, celebrating 100 years of service to the Jewish community of the United States and other countries, is a foremost leader in youth work, advocacy for the disabled, synagogue services, adult education and political action. Its kosher supervision label, the OU, is the world’s most recognized kosher symbol and can be found on over 200,000 products in 56 countries around the globe.
