ORTHODOX UNION TO HONOR
SENATOR DANIEL PATRICK MOYNIHAN
New Yorks Senior Senator Daniel Patrick Moynihan
will be the guest of honor at the Orthodox Unions Institute for Public Affairs
Dinner to be held at the Grand Hyatt Hotel in New York City on Columbus Day, Monday,
October 11, 1999.
"For almost forty years, Senator Moynihan has
played a unique role in American public life," Orthodox Union President Dr.
Mandell I. Ganchrow said.
"We appreciate the Senators well known
aversion to accepting public honors and are particularly proud that he has allowed his
friends in the Orthodox Union to pay him this deeply deserved tribute - the first award he
has accepted from any Jewish organization in over three years," Dr. Ganchrow added.
Senator Moynihans friendship with the Orthodox
Union dates back to 1963 when he worked with the Unions leadership while advising
President John F. Kennedy on the question of government aid to non public schools.
Dr. Ganchrow cited the Senators leadership on this issue as well as his
historic championing of Israeli causes as United States Ambassador to the United Nations
and as a United States Senator.
"In our collective communal memories the name
Daniel Patrick Moynihan will always be synonymous with his successful sixteen-year effort
to repeal the odious General Assembly resolution equating Zionism with racism and his
ongoing two-decade struggle to have the United States acknowledge Jerusalem as the capital
of Israel. Senator Moynihan has always been, as Prime Minister Menachem Begin so
aptly declared him, a friend for all seasons, for all reasons, " said Dr.
Ganchrow.
Daniel Patrick Moynihan is the only person in American
history to have served in the cabinet or sub-cabinet of four consecutive presidents. He is
an accomplished author and distinguished scholar who the Almanac of American Politics has
hailed as "the nations best thinker among politicians since Lincoln, and its
best politician among thinkers since Jefferson."
The dinner is sponsored by the Institute for Public
Affairs, the OUs research and advocacy arm.
"Ever since its inception over a decade ago, the
IPA has been in the forefront of advocating for Orthodox Jewish interests and concerns.
Senator Moynihan has always championed these causes as part of his core vision,"
declared IPA Chairman Professor Richard Stone. "We are privileged to honor such
a longtime and unwavering ally of Israel and the Jewish community, and are delighted that
the Senator is allowing his many friends in the Jewish community this opportunity to
express their profound appreciation for his lifetime of selfless pubic service."
Established in 1983, the IPA was created to represent
and mobilize the worlds largest Orthodox Jewish community. Representing nearly 1,000
synagogues across the country, the IPA works to protect Jewish interests and freedoms by
providing government officials with informative policy briefings, advocating legislative
and regulatory initiatives, and coordinating its constituencys grass-roots political
activities.
The Orthodox Union, celebrating 100 years of service to
the Jewish community of America and beyond, is a leader in youth work, advocacy for the
disabled, synagogue services, adult education and political action. Its kosher supervision
label, the OU, is the worlds most recognized kosher symbol and can be found on over
200,000 products in 59 countries around the globe.
