Rabbi Abraham Cooper to be Honored at
OU National Anniversary Dinner

Rabbi Abraham Cooper, associate dean of the Simon Wiesenthal Center in Los Angeles, will be honored by the Orthodox Union with its International Communal Service Award for his long-standing commitment to community service and his contributions to Jewish life, at the OU’s 103nd Anniversary National Dinner on Sunday, May 20, 2001, at the Grand Hyatt Hotel in New York.

Rabbi Cooper helped to found The Simon Wiesenthal Center, a leading Jewish human rights organization, with Rabbi Marvin Hier in 1977.  A New York native, Rabbi Cooper has been a longtime activist for Jewish and human rights causes on five continents.  His extensive involvement with Soviet Jewry included visiting refuseniks, helping to open the first Jewish Cultural Center in Moscow and lecturing at the Soviet Academy of Sciences and the Sakharov Foundation.

Rabbi Cooper received a B.A. and M.S. from Yeshiva University and a Ph.D. from the Jewish University of America.  For nearly a quarter of a century, Rabbi Cooper has overseen the Wiesenthal Center’s international social agenda.  He has supervised the Center’s annual CD-ROM reports on digital hate and also oversees the Center’s Task Force Against Hate, as a result of which he is widely recognized as a pioneer and international authority on issues related to digital hate and the Internet.

As associate dean, he supervised the research and production of the Interactive Learning Center on the Holocaust and World War II for the Center’s renowned Museum of Tolerance and has supervised the Center’s entry into the digital age through its website, www.wiesenthal.com.  He has also written the World Book Encyclopedia’s entry on Raoul Wallenberg and edited two major works on this Holocaust hero.  In addition, Rabbi Cooper is the editor-in-chief of Response magazine and his editorials appear in the nation’s top newspapers.

“Throughout his life, Rabbi Cooper has personified the ideals of tikkun olam  (repairing the world),” said OU President Harvey Blitz.  “We are proud to honor his selfless devotion to the greater community and to klal Yisrael.”

Other honorees at the Union’s Anniversary Dinner include: Rabbi Kenneth Hain; Rosalyn and Franklyn Snitow; and Naomi and Harvey Wolinetz.
