Gives Thanks
New Jersey Resident to be Honored at Annual Yachad Dinner
The
Orthodox Unions (OU) National
Jewish Council for the Disabled (NJCD) is pleased to honor its
National Director for the past ten years, Dr. Jeffrey Lichtman, with the
Outstanding Leadership Award at the Annual
NJCD dinner, Monday, December 4, in Manhattan.
Dr.
Jeffrey Lichtman has enjoyed remarkable success as a groundbreaking
leader, innovative teacher, imaginative programmer and steadfast friend
of the developmentally disabled for more than 25 years.
Dr.
Lichtman has positively impacted the lives of thousands of
developmentally disabled youth and adults through Shabbatonim, summer
programs, conferences, vocational programs, social events and family
educational seminars. Dr.
Lichtman is also an assistant professor at the City University of New
York, a school psychologist at Torah Academy of Bergen County and a
consultant to schools and agencies that work with individuals who have
special needs.
Dr.
Lichtman was graduated from Yeshiva University with a bachelors degree
in psychology and education. He
received semicha from the Rabbi Isaac Elchanan Theological Seminary, a
masters degree in special education from New York University, a second
masters degree in school psychology from St. Johns University, and
was awarded a doctorate degree in educational administration from
Yeshiva University.
Dr.
Lichtman has served the community as a dedicated educator in many
capacities including: principal of the Max Gilbert Hebrew Academy in
Syracuse, NY; director of the Department of Youth Services at Yeshiva
University; psychologist at the Jewish Center for Special Education;
psychologist on the New York City Board of Education committee on
Special Education; executive director of the Torah High School Network;
principal of the SINAI Special Needs High School; and educational
consultant for Maimonides Day School in Baltimore.
Dr.
Lichtman is a member of the State Advisory Committee to New Jersey
Commissioner of Education and a chairman of the Board of Education at
the Joseph Kushner Hebrew Academy.
He and his wife, Helen, have three children and reside in West
Orange, NJ.

Ganchrow, M.D., explained, For the past ten years, Dr. Lichtman has
served as the National Director of NJCD, implementing innovative new
programs and instituting groundbreaking initiatives.
His dynamic enthusiasm and steadfast commitment to the
developmentally disabled community should serve as an example of what it
means to dedicate ones life to enriching the lives of others.
With more than 35 chapters
throughout the United States and Canada, the NJCD, an agency of the
Orthodox Union, is the only national resource center providing
specialized guidance and information as well as direct services to those
in the Jewish community who have special
needs. Yachad, a division of the NJCD, provides a wide range of social,
recreational and religious programs, serving well over 1,500 children
and adults with developmental disabilities.
Established in 1969, Our
Way is the only Jewish movement reaching out to the deaf and hearing
impaired across the country and bridging the gap between the hearing and
non-hearing worlds. Through a vast array of programs including
Shabbatonim, holiday celebrations, a deaf singles registry, Torah study
groups, summer tours, family retreats, conventions and special signing
publications, Our Way provides spiritual and social opportunities for
nearly 1,000 deaf across the country.
The
Orthodox Union, now in its second century of service to the Jewish
