Yachad Gives Thanks
Brooklyn Resident to be Honored at Annual Yachad Dinner
The Orthodox Union's (OU) National
Jewish Council for the Disabled
(NJCD) will honor the Apfeldorf family with the Achim-Gam-Yachad Family
Award at the Annual NJCD
dinner, Monday, December 4, in Manhattan.
The Apfeldorf family has demonstrated
the power that a family with commitment, conviction and support can
achieve on behalf of children with developmental disabilities. In
recognition of their tireless efforts and exceptional dedication in
working on behalf of their daughter Tamar, and other persons and
families with special needs, NJCD/Yachad will present its
Achim-Gam-Yachad Family Award to Hadassa, Meyer, Elisheva, Tamar, Ariel
and Michal Apfeldorf.
As parents, Meyer and Hadassa
Apfeldorf have been among the most energetic and passionate supporters
of NJCD. Together with their children, they work tirelessly to advocate
for Tamar in every way and have enabled her to lead a very active and
full life. This past summer, Tamar had the
"thrill-of-a-lifetime" experience traveling for one month on
the Yad B'Yad East Coast Tour.
In their long friendship with the
NJCD, the Apfeldorfs have turned to NJCD/Yachad for support and ongoing
help. They, in turn, have also set a wonderful example and acted as
mentors to other families who have children in Yachad. Recently,
as a direct result of Meyer's activism and leadership, NJCD created a
parent advisory council to represent and provide support to families who
have children in residential settings.
OU President Mandell I. Ganchrow,
M.D., explained, "The success of NJCD is largely reliant on the
participation and support of the families of our Yachad members.
The Apfeldorf's tremendous role in strengthening our organization
through their love and commitment is inspirational."
With more than 35 chapters throughout
the United States and Canada, the NJCD, an agency of the Orthodox Union,
is the only national resource center providing specialized guidance and
information as well as direct services to those in the Jewish community
who have special needs. Yachad, a division of the NJCD, provides a wide
range of social, recreational and religious programs, serving well over
1,500 children and adults with developmental disabilities.
Established in 1969, Our
Way is the only Jewish movement reaching out to the deaf and hearing
impaired across the country and bridging the gap between the hearing and
non-hearing worlds. Through a vast array of programs including
Shabbatonim, holiday celebrations, a deaf singles registry, Torah study
groups, summer tours, family retreats, conventions and special signing
publications, Our Way provides spiritual and social opportunities for
nearly 1,000 deaf across the country.
The
Orthodox Union, now in its second century of service to the Jewish
community of America and beyond, is the world leader in youth
work,
advocacy for the disabled, synagogue
services, adult education and
political action. Its kosher
supervision label, the
,
