Savannah, GA United States – OU Communities

About this community

Savannah, GA, “The Hostess City”, is one of the oldest cities (and Jewish communities) in the USA—located between Charleston and Jacksonville on the US East Coast and a 4-hour drive from Atlanta. Consistently named one of the “world’s friendliest cities”, this coastal town has a world-class reputation for hospitality and grace. Savannah boasts the largest National Historic Landmark District in the country and sits atop many “best-of” travel lists. While Savannah is missing things like snow, traffic, and long commutes, it is full of parks, squares, islands, and beaches.

Savannah’s median home value is $325,000-$375,000, and within the eruv, home prices range from under $200,000—over $1 million. Jobs are available in a wide range of fields: medicine, dentistry, education, logistics, Georgia Port, engineering, design, film, music and more. Area universities include Georgia Southern University, South University, Savannah State University, and Savannah College of Art and Design.

The Jewish community of Savannah was established in 1733. The orthodox shul (Bnai Brith Jacob–BBJ) was established in 1854 and boasts a membership of 300 families and is home to the Savannah Kollel and an award-winning NCSY chapter. The Rambam Day School (pre-k—8th grade) is highly accredited and caters to the full spectrum of Jewish students. Ateres High School for young women serves both local and out of town students with a high quality Beis Yaakov education. Kosher catering and take-out are provided through the BBJ Food Service, and kosher groceries are available at the local grocery stores as well as through Kosher co-ops. A new mikvah at the BBJ is currently under construction. There is a Chabad in downtown Savannah, and a well-programmed and well-equipped Jewish Community Center not far from the BBJ. There is a Kosher Assisted Living Center adjacent to the BBJ.
