That's Fourteen, Not SevenBy Rabbi Jack Abramowitz
Noach had been instructed to gather one pair of every non-kosher animal and seven pairs of every kosher animal. (That’s fourteen Guernsey cows and fourteen gazelles, not two or seven. Lots of people miss that.) He was also instructed to take seven pairs of each bird. Noach was 600 years old when he accomplished all this.
A week after G-d commanded Noach to load the ark, He opened the metaphorical gates of the Heavens and poured rain upon the Earth. The rain started on the 17th day of the month of Cheshvan in the year 1656 (counting from creation); it lasted for forty days and nights. When the rain started, Noach boarded the ark with his family; G-d sealed them inside the ark.
