Tirat Tzvi needed to guard its fields, including on Shabbat. One option was to have mounted guards, who could cover more ground and have fewer people disregarding Shabbat, or to have more people on foot (which, the questioners assumed, would involve fewer prohibitions per person)? Which was preferable?
