{"id":63874,"date":"2024-05-15T14:08:20","date_gmt":"2024-05-15T19:08:20","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.ou.org\/life\/?p=63874"},"modified":"2024-05-15T14:09:45","modified_gmt":"2024-05-15T19:09:45","slug":"prioritizing-chesed-ou-board-member-and-advocacy-center-chairman-yitzie-pretter","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.ou.org\/life\/meet-the-ou\/prioritizing-chesed-ou-board-member-and-advocacy-center-chairman-yitzie-pretter\/","title":{"rendered":"Prioritizing Chesed: OU Board Member and Advocacy Center Chairman Yitzie Pretter"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Yitzie Pretter\u2019s personal mantra is, \u201c<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">We\u2019ll have plenty of time to rest after 120.\u201d\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">In the interim, he intends to live life to the fullest and do as much chesed and <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">klal <\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">work as possible, including at the OU, where he chairs its Advocacy Center and sits on the general OU Board of Governors.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">\u201cI have always admired the OU and the broad reach it has for the Orthodox community in so many facets of life,\u201d he says. \u201cI think it is the single most impactful Jewish organization.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">A resident of Baltimore, MD, Yitzie grew up in Staten Island, NY, and attended JEC (Jewish Educational Center) high school in Elizabeth, New Jersey. Raised in a home where his parents, Chaim, a\u201dh, and Simie, were always \u201cdoing for others\u201d,\u00a0 Yitzie was imbued with the values of chesed and community from an early age.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">\u201cMy f<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">ather <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">was very inv<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">olved in our shul, Agudah of Staten Island,\u201d he says. \u201cHe ran the father and son learning program there and it grew into a community-wide initiative, now known as the Chaim Ozer Father and Son Learning Program. My mother was always doing chesed for others<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> and continues to do so to this day. There is a frum woman who has been at Staten Island\u2019s South Beach Psychiatric Center for years. My mother visits her weekly to give her <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">chizuk<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">; few people visit her. She also visits other sick community members weekly.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Communal leaders also inspire Yitzie. At Ner Yisroel, where he earned a Bachelor of Talmudic Law, Yitzie learned more about communal <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">achrayus<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> (responsibility) and<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400\">was moved by Rabbi Herman Neuberger\u2019s devotion to the <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">klal<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">. Additionally, Yitzie cites OU Executive Vice President Rabbi Moshe Hauer as a venerable role model.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">\u201cI belong to Bnai Jacob Shaarei Zion shul in Baltimore where Rabbi Hauer served for 26 years and continues to be a part of the shul as rabbi emeritus,\u201d he says. \u201c<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Rabbi Hauer has had the most significant impact on my involvement in the <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">klal<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> by encouraging me to get involved in communal matters and providing the lens with which to view issues with nuance. I continue to seek his guidance on <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">hashkafik<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">\u00a0 (ideological) matters. When there is a difficult communal issue regarding how we should act or respond, I look to him for guidance.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_63877\" class=\"thumbnail wp-caption alignleft\" style=\"width: 350px\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-63877\" src=\"https:\/\/www.ou.org\/life\/files\/Yitzie-Pretter-Family-1-300x253.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"350\" height=\"295\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.ou.org\/life\/files\/Yitzie-Pretter-Family-1-300x253.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.ou.org\/life\/files\/Yitzie-Pretter-Family-1.jpg 600w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 350px) 100vw, 350px\" \/><figcaption class=\"caption wp-caption-text\">The Pretter Family: Son Chaim, 13; son-in-law Avi Herskowitz, 23; daughter Estee, 21; Nancy; Yitzie; daughters Rivkie and Leah, both 19; and Rena, 16.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Yitzie holds a MBA from Johns Hopkins University, which he parlayed into a career as principal of Mosaic Realty Partners, a commercial real estate company. Together with Nancy, his wife of 22 years, they are the proud parents of five children ranging in age from 13 to 21.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">The couple dedicate themselves to multiple organizations: Nancy <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">serves on the boards of Baltimore\u2019s Levindale Hospital, Bas Melech Performing Arts, and Jewish Caring Network, a nonprofit that supports families facing serious illnesses. Yitzie is <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Bnai Jacob Shaarei Zion\u2019s<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> treasurer, and serves on the boards of <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">American Friends of Magen David Adom (where he chairs the Audit Committee), <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">T<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">he Associated: Jewish Federation of Baltimore, and some of its agencies, as well as <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">two local Jewish schools. He also volunteers with organizations that <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">help teens at risk and families facing lifelong illness, and has been involved with AIPAC and JFNA for many years.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Yitzie acknowledges that it\u2019s not easy balancing multiple commitments, but sees volunteerism as a moral imperative \u2013 one that he and Nancy hope to impart to their children.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">\u201cIt\u2019s always difficult to juggle work, family and other responsibilities,\u201d he says. \u201cAlthough we need to take care of ourselves, I have learned that our purpose in this world is to serve Hashem and to do for others. As I started to get involved in various organizations, I realized that there is a serious need for volunteers and lay leaders in the Orthodox community. My wife Nancy has been very supportive of my involvement and it wouldn\u2019t be possible to do what I do without her encouragement. We hope that our children will see what we do and choose to get involved in causes they are passionate about.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Yitzie holds a special place in his heart for the OU, where he has served on the Advocacy Center\u2019s board for the past six years and is now the commission chair. He has also been a member of OU\u2019s Board of Governors for the past 18 months.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">\u201cAs I am most involved in OU Advocacy, when we see our efforts come to fruition around initiatives that directly help our community \u2013 like the Nonprofit Security Grant Program which helps to secure our communal institutions \u2013\u00a0 it is very gratifying,\u201d he says. \u201cI was very pleased with our mission to D.C.<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400\">in January, wh<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">ich was attended by over 100 lay leaders from around the U.S. Leading senators and representatives from both sides of the aisle addressed us.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Yitzie also appreciates the tremendous respect accorded to OU Advocacy Center Executive Director Nathan Diament on Capitol Hill.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">\u201cHe has led OUA for 27 years and has deep and meaningful relationships throughout Washington which have benefited our community immensely,\u201d Yitzie observes. \u201cIt\u2019s a pleasure to work with him.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Yitzie is proud of the OU\u2019s success in recent years in expanding and broadening its reach.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Still, he says, most people largely associate the organization with its tremendous kashrus initiatives, while the OU is also profoundly impactful in myriad other ways.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">\u201cI think we still have work to do in terms of educating various segments of the Orthodox community about what we do, and how we can help everyone,\u201d Yitzie says.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">And he is totally on board to help make that happen.<\/span><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Yitzie Pretter\u2019s personal mantra is, \u201cWe\u2019ll have plenty of time to rest after 120.\u201d\u00a0 In the interim, he intends to live life to the fullest and do as much chesed and klal work as possible, including at the OU, where he chairs its Advocacy Center and sits on the general OU Board of Governors. \u201cI<\/p>\n","protected":false},"author":730,"featured_media":63882,"comment_status":"closed","ping_status":"closed","sticky":false,"template":"","format":"standard","meta":{"_acf_changed":false,"footnotes":""},"categories":[187],"tags":[],"class_list":["post-63874","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","has-post-thumbnail","hentry","category-meet-the-ou"],"yoast_head":"<!-- This site is optimized with the Yoast SEO plugin v24.9 -
