Ensuring the right people are in the right positions and are happy in their environment is a formidable task.\u00a0<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p>Meet Renee Wietschner Cutler, the go-to person for all human resources issues at the Orthodox Union, from recruiting, onboarding, maternity leave and everything in-between.<\/p>\n<p>Renee says \u201cdedication and wanting to make a difference in the community\u201d are leading qualities the OU\u00a0seeks\u00a0in candidates. She says applicants should be \u201cmotivated and willing to learn\u201d and be \u201chonest and professional,\u201d to thrive in the workplace.<\/p>\n<p>So far, it may sound like any other corporate environment.<\/p>\n<p>However, the OU\u00a0maintains\u00a0a unique work culture reflecting values of the community it serves that go far beyond time off for Jewish holidays.\u00a0\u201cThere are many perks that come along with a career at the OU, the best being that the work is meaningful,\u201d she says, adding that OU staff are \u201ctruly making a difference.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>A genuine people person, pivoting to remote work during the pandemic was a challenge. Renee quickly adapted and a hybrid of virtual and face-to-face professional interactions is now the norm.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI really love what I do. I live and breathe what I do,\u201d she says of her six years at the OU.<\/p>\n<p>But it almost\u00a0didn\u2019t\u00a0happen.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-post-63638 wp-image-63640 alignright\" src=\"https:\/\/www.ou.org\/life\/files\/renee-hr.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"351\" height=\"351\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.ou.org\/life\/files\/renee-hr.jpg 351w, https:\/\/www.ou.org\/life\/files\/renee-hr-300x300.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.ou.org\/life\/files\/renee-hr-155x155.jpg 155w, https:\/\/www.ou.org\/life\/files\/renee-hr-270x270.jpg 270w, https:\/\/www.ou.org\/life\/files\/renee-hr-200x200.jpg 200w, https:\/\/www.ou.org\/life\/files\/renee-hr-130x130.jpg 130w, https:\/\/www.ou.org\/life\/files\/renee-hr-60x60.jpg 60w, https:\/\/www.ou.org\/life\/files\/renee-hr-70x70.jpg 70w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 351px) 100vw, 351px\" \/>Renee had planned on becoming an occupational therapist. Later, she realized that it was not for her and changed direction. She studied business and looked for a way to merge that with her psychology major. Human Resources was the answer, and she earned an M.S. from NYU in Human Resource Management and Development. \u201cIn this field I am still helping people and it\u2019s a very people facing profession, which is what I like.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Her efforts have a tangible impact on life at the OU, contributing to the environment that makes it a special place to work.<\/p>\n<p>Renee created a\u00a0program\u00a0for employees\u00a0blessed with a new baby.\u00a0When new parents go out on\u00a0parental\u00a0leave,\u00a0they\u00a0receive\u00a0newborn starter kits packed with essentials like diapers, wipes,\u00a0and a bib featuring the OU logo. \u201cWe want to show that we care about parents and are here to support them during this stage,\u201d she says.<\/p>\n<p>That\u2019s just one of the many changes implemented by the OU HR department. Renee also leads weekly orientations held over group video sessions, a departure from the phone calls and individual office meetings of the past. \u201cThis was a major change and win for our department because we realized that we can be more efficient, and we recognized the value in new employees across all OU departments and offices meeting each other at the same time.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Another aspect of her work involves interviewing employees exiting the organization with the goal of examining lessons learned to make improvements. \u201cThis has been very eye opening to me as the feedback that we have received would be something I would have never seen myself,\u201d she reveals.<\/p>\n<p>So, what does it take to excel as an HR\u00a0specialist at an organization with hundreds of employees?<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI would say the secret is to be reliable, patient, empathetic and understanding of situations that arise,\u201d Renee explains.<\/p>\n<p>In her spare time, Renee is a foodie who explores restaurants and snacks, sharing her experiences through her Instagram account and helping people looking for kosher food in the NY area and beyond. An avid traveler, Renee aims to visit all 50 states with her husband.
