{"id":63174,"date":"2021-03-18T12:26:42","date_gmt":"2021-03-18T17:26:42","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.ou.org\/life\/?p=63174"},"modified":"2021-03-18T12:26:42","modified_gmt":"2021-03-18T17:26:42","slug":"the-answer-to-the-defiant-childs-question-an-approach-to-the-challenges-of-adolescence","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.ou.org\/life\/parenting\/the-answer-to-the-defiant-childs-question-an-approach-to-the-challenges-of-adolescence\/","title":{"rendered":"The Answer to the Defiant Child\u2019s Question:\u00a0An Approach to the Challenges of Adolescence"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cBlessed be G-d, Blessed be He;\u00a0<\/span><\/i><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Blessed be the One who Gave the Torah to His people Israel, Blessed be He.\u00a0<\/span><\/i><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Corresponding to four sons did the Torah speak; one [who is] wise, one [who is] evil, one who is innocent and one who doesn&#8217;t know to ask.\u201d\u00a0 (Passover Haggadah)<\/span><\/i><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">T<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">he section of t<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">he Four Sons <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">is one of the most famous, recognizable and popular parts of Passover\u2019s Haggadah liturgy.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Yet, despite the popularity of the section and the plethora of commentaries explaining it, the wisdom which underlies the answer to the <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">evil<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\/<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">defiant son\u2019s <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">question is difficult to comprehend.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 80px;\"><em><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">defiant son<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> asks,<br \/>\n<\/span><\/em><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 40px;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u00a0 \u00a0 <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u05de\u05d4 \u05d4\u05e2\u05d1\u05d5\u05d3\u05d4 \u05d4\u05d6\u05d0\u05ea \u05dc\u05db\u05dd<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 80px;\"><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">What is this work (the Paschal Service) <\/span><\/i><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">to you<\/span><\/i><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The author of the Haggadah notes that the phrase \u201c<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">to you<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201d is understood as a sign of the <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">defiant son\u2019s <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">nefarious behavior as he desires to exclude himself from the Jewish community.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The Haggadah cites a verse from Exodus 13:8 as an answer to the <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">defiant son<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 80px;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">&#8216;\u05d1\u05b7\u05bc\u05e2\u05b2\u05d1\u05d5\u05bc\u05e8 \u05d6\u05b6\u05d4 \u05e2\u05b8\u05e9\u05b8\u05c2\u05d4 \u05d4&#8217; \u05dc\u05b4\u05d9 \u05d1\u05b0\u05bc\u05e6\u05b5\u05d0\u05ea\u05b4\u05d9 \u05de\u05b4\u05de\u05b4\u05bc\u05e6\u05b0\u05e8\u05b8\u05d9\u05b4\u05dd&#8217;.<br \/>\n<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u05dc\u05b4\u05d9 \u05d5\u05b0\u05dc\u05b9\u05d0\u05be\u05dc\u05d5\u05b9. \u05d0\u05b4\u05dc\u05bc\u05d5\u05bc \u05d4\u05b8\u05d9\u05b8\u05d4 \u05e9\u05b8\u05c1\u05dd, \u05dc\u05b9\u05d0 \u05d4\u05b8\u05d9\u05b8\u05d4 \u05e0\u05b4\u05d2\u05b0\u05d0\u05b8\u05dc:<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 80px;\"><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u2018Because of this\u2019, (the Paschal Service),<br \/>\n<\/span><\/i><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">G-d did this for me, when I left Egypt<br \/>\n<\/span><\/i><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">&#8216;For me&#8217; and not &#8216;for him.&#8217;<br \/>\n<\/span><\/i><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">If he (the defiant son) had been there, he would not have been saved<\/span><\/i><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The father\u2019s response communicates that a direct consequence of isolating from the Jewish community would result in the loss of the <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">defiant son<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> to Jewish destiny.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Is this really the best that the Torah can do<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">?\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In this section, the Haggadah honestly acknowledges that children can stray from their parents\u2019 path. If we believe that the Torah is a repository of all wisdom, <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">(<\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Ethics of our Fathers 5:22<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">) <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">then the Haggadah\u2019s answer should contain a valuable insight into the issues of parenting oppositional adolescents. The Haggadah\u2019s response however, doesn\u2019t seem to provide any profound or meaningful guidance to mothers and fathers who are struggling in their roles as parents.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Moreover, before the Haggadah presents this answer, the Haggadah gives an odd and almost <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Medieval<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> instruction to the <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">defiant son&#8217;<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">s father:\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 80px;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u05d5\u05b0\u05d0\u05b7\u05e3 \u05d0\u05b7\u05ea\u05b8\u05bc\u05d4 \u05d4\u05b7\u05e7\u05b0\u05d4\u05b5\u05d4 \u05d0\u05b6\u05ea \u05e9\u05b4\u05c1\u05e0\u05b8\u05bc\u05d9\u05d5<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 80px;\"><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">And accordingly, you will blunt (lit. strike) his teeth\u00a0<\/span><\/i><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Even if the words <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">and accordingly<\/span><\/i> <i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">you will strike his teeth<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, are to be understood metaphorically as a method of deflecting the son\u2019s anger, it is difficult to discern how the response of \u201c<\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">for me and not for him\u201d<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> accomplishes this goal.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Perhaps the Haggadah is shedding light on an important aspect of parenting adolescents.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Invariably, when children are younger, parents can more easily instruct their children to perform or cease to perform a particular action, as children are dependent on parents and look to them as guides.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">When children become teenagers and achieve their <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">halachic majority<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> by becoming <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">ba<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">r and <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">bat-mitzvah<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, they begin to become more independent.. Which is a natural and necessary part of the growing process.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">As <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Dr. Kenneth R. Ginsburg<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u00a0writes, \u201c<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It is an adolescent\u2019s job to gain the confidence to be able to stand on his own<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">&#8230;<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">it is critical to their well-being and to the health of our relationships that we honor their growing independence.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Consequently, adolescents may not comply with a parent\u2019s directive simply because they are trying to carve out their own space and identity. Oftentimes, a parent internalizes any negative response from a teenager as an affront and will repeat an instruction more forcefully, in an effort to gain compliance. If the instruction is not followed, a power struggle can develop.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Psychotherapist <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Brendan Bell<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u00a0notes that power struggles with teenagers can be the ultimate \u201cno-win\u201d situation for parents.\u00a0<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">He notes that, <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201c<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">while there are definitely situations where power struggles are necessary (usually related to safety issues), the overuse and misuse of power struggles can provide the breeding ground for oppositional behavior in children and teens.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Best-selling author and psychotherapist <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Amy Morin<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, suggests using <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">consequences <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">when attempting to modify adolescent behavior.\u00a0<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">When a parent simply and calmly presents consequences as a response for a given behavior, a child begins to understand the importance of his\/her decision making process, and that our choices have very real ramifications.\u00a0<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Morin writes,<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> \u201cConsequences help children see that (if) they made a bad choice, they are (still) capable of doing better in the future. And ultimately, consequences are more effective (than punishment) in improving behavior problems in children.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Maybe, the wisdom of the father\u2019s response to the <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">defiant son,<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">is that parents <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">should avoid engaging in power struggles with children, and instead focus on the consequences of a child\u2019s actions.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Clearly the <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">defiant son<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> is angry and frustrated with his perceptions of Judaism.<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> When the <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">defiant son<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> says \u201c<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">what is this work <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">(avodah)<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> to you,<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201d he chooses the word <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">avodah <\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">to express that Judaism is \u201c<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">work<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201d; a drudgery to avoid.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The wisdom of the response to the <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">defiant son<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> is that the father doesn\u2019t allow the defiant son\u2019s statement to escalate into a contest for control. The father doesn\u2019t say to his son, \u201cY<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">ou are wrong; Torah is not a burden,<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201d or \u201cY<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">ou are seriously misguided; it is an honor to prepare for Passover.&#8221;\u00a0<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Rather, the father literally blunts the attack of his child by simply presenting a natural ramification of his son\u2019s attitude.<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> The father explains that the outcome of the son\u2019s desire to separate from the Jewish people could result in the child being lost to Jewish destiny.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The father is implicitly saying to his son, \u201c<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">that you are part of a long and beautiful chain of history and tradition which is meaningful and profound. Although you are presently frustrated with Torah laws, there will come a time when that may change.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Furthermore, The Haggadah in formulating the father\u2019s response writes:<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>\u05d5\u05b6\u05d0\u05b1\u05de\u05d5\u05b9\u05e8<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> \u05dc\u05d5<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">And (the father) <strong>shal<\/strong><\/span><b>l say<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> to him (the defiant son)<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">According to<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Rashi<\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">,<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> the word \u05d0\u05b1\u05de\u05d5\u05b9\u05e8\/<\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">emor <\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">is a verb which connotes a <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">kinder and gentler<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> form of speech. The Haggadah\u2019s choice of this verb, instructs parents not to raise their voices when confronted by oppositional behavior, but rather<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">to speak softly.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The key<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">to the success of the \u2018response of consequence\u2019 is that it is delivered without anger on the part of the parent. A calm approach is the source of its effectiveness and protects it from the power struggle. Additionally, an understanding manner communicates love and patience, thereby giving an adolescent the ability to build their own religious identity.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Satmar Rebbe Rav Yoel Teitelbaum<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> noted that the questions of the <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">defiant son<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and the <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">wise son <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">are placed in direct proximity to one another and there is a stylistic similarity between the two questions. <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">According to the Rebbe, the linkage between the two questions communicates a vital idea that parents with oppositional adolescents should know and remember<\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">: <\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">with<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> o<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">ur efforts and with help from G-d,<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">today\u2019s defiant\u00a0 son, can be tomorrow\u2019s wise son.<\/span><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>\u201cBlessed be G-d, Blessed be He;\u00a0Blessed be the One who Gave the Torah to His people Israel, Blessed be He.\u00a0Corresponding to four sons did the Torah speak;
