{"id":62332,"date":"2019-09-11T14:24:30","date_gmt":"2019-09-11T19:24:30","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.ou.org\/life\/?p=62332"},"modified":"2019-09-11T14:24:30","modified_gmt":"2019-09-11T19:24:30","slug":"tiny-first-temple-seal-impression-found-with-name-of-bible-era-royal-steward","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.ou.org\/life\/israel\/tiny-first-temple-seal-impression-found-with-name-of-bible-era-royal-steward\/","title":{"rendered":"Tiny First Temple Seal Impression Found with Name of Bible-era Royal Steward"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>A minuscule 7th century BCE clay sealing reading \u201cBelonging to Adoniyahu, the Royal Steward,\u201d was recently discovered in the City of David\u2019s sifting project.<\/p>\n<p>In earth excavated from the foundations of the Western Wall under Robinson\u2019s Arch in 2013, a national service volunteer some three weeks ago unearthed the one-centimeter inscribed letter sealer bearing the ancient Hebrew name of a character found several times in the Hebrew Bible, Adoniyahu, literally, \u201cThe Lord is my Master.\u201d (In English translations of the Bible, the name is written Adonijah.)<\/p>\n<p>According to archaeologist Eli Shukron, this inscription is unique and \u201cof utmost importance.\u201d The role of the Royal Steward (Asher al Habayit), he said, appears several times in the Bible and is used for the highest-level minister in the royal court.
