It was dark. The only light I had was from my iPhone, which was propped up on a towel from the linen closet. It smelled. But I was determined to get the hinge off, which would allow me to get the door off, which would allow me to complete the task at hand.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span class=\"s3\">The giggling in the background didn\u2019t help, as a decent screwdriver might, but it didn\u2019t bother me either.<\/span><span class=\"s3\">\u00a0I was in a house, somewhere outside\u00a0<\/span><span class=\"s3\">of San Juan,\u00a0<\/span><span class=\"s3\">Puerto Rico,\u00a0<\/span><span class=\"s3\">on a<\/span><span class=\"s3\">n<\/span><span class=\"s3\">NCSY\u00a0<\/span><span class=\"s3\">Relief Mission<\/span><span class=\"s3\">\u00a0with 15 Jewish teens<\/span><span class=\"s3\">, from both<\/span><span class=\"s3\">\u00a0a<\/span><span class=\"s3\">public\u00a0<\/span><span class=\"s3\">high school\u00a0<\/span><span class=\"s3\">and\u00a0<\/span><span class=\"s3\">a\u00a0<\/span><span class=\"s3\"><em>yeshiva<\/em>\u00a0day<\/span>\u00a0<span class=\"s3\">school.\u00a0<\/span><span class=\"s3\">Our job that day was to repair a home devastated by Hurricane Maria in September 2017. And my particular job was to remove the door<\/span><span class=\"s3\">s. Yup,\u00a0<\/span><span class=\"s3\">the<\/span><span class=\"s3\">y were<\/span><span class=\"s3\">\u00a0painted in, jammed closed,\u00a0<\/span><span class=\"s3\">and\u00a0<\/span><span class=\"s3\">mildew<\/span><span class=\"s3\">ed.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span class=\"s3\">NCSY started bringing Jewish teens on\u00a0<\/span><span class=\"s3\">Relief Missions<\/span><span class=\"s3\">several\u00a0<\/span><span class=\"s3\">years ago. To date, under the guidance of Rabbi Ethan Katz,\u00a0<\/span><span class=\"s3\">NCSY<\/span><span class=\"s3\">\u00a0ha<\/span><span class=\"s3\">s<\/span><span class=\"s3\">\u00a0conducted 103<\/span><em><span class=\"s3\">\u00a0\u2018chesed\u2019<\/span><\/em><span class=\"s3\">\u00a0missions, bringing<\/span><span class=\"s3\">\u00a0roughly\u00a0<\/span><span class=\"s3\">1,500 teens to\u00a0<\/span><span class=\"s3\">natural disaster-rampaged\u00a0<\/span><span class=\"s3\">places<\/span><span class=\"s3\">,\u00a0<\/span><span class=\"s3\">including Houston, New Orleans<\/span>\u00a0<span class=\"s3\">and San Juan.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span class=\"s3\">It\u2019s w<\/span><span class=\"s3\">orth pointing out<\/span>\u00a0<span class=\"s3\">that there is no\u00a0<\/span><span class=\"s3\">W<\/span><span class=\"s3\">i-Fi<\/span><span class=\"s3\">\u00a0in many places we work<\/span><span class=\"s3\">ed<\/span><span class=\"s3\">.<\/span>\u00a0<span class=\"s3\">By extension, t<\/span><span class=\"s3\">he idea of bringing a teen<\/span>\u00a0<span class=\"s3\">to do physical labor, all day, with no\u00a0<\/span><span class=\"s3\">internet access\u00a0<\/span><span class=\"s3\">seemed ludicrous. As a parent, I could not fathom how this would<\/span><span class=\"s3\">work for more than six minutes at a time,\u00a0<\/span><span class=\"s3\">let alone all da<\/span><span class=\"s3\">y \u2013 da<\/span><span class=\"s3\">y after day.
