{"id":60211,"date":"2018-07-16T10:01:44","date_gmt":"2018-07-16T15:01:44","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.ou.org\/life\/?p=60211"},"modified":"2018-07-18T08:53:19","modified_gmt":"2018-07-18T13:53:19","slug":"mashiachs-hat","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.ou.org\/life\/holidays\/mashiachs-hat\/","title":{"rendered":"Mashiach\u2019s Hat"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>(Originally published as &#8220;Ode to Purim&#8221;)<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;yeshno am echod m&#8217;Foozar umi&#8217;forud&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>To all of &#8220;us&#8221;, from one of &#8220;them&#8221;.<br \/>\n&#8212;&#8212;&#8212;&#8212;&#8212;&#8212;&#8212;&#8212;&#8212;&#8212;&#8212;&#8212;&#8212;<\/p>\n<p>T&#8217;was the night of the geulah,<br \/>\nand in every single shteibel,<br \/>\nsounds of Torah could be heard,<br \/>\ncoming from every kind of Yeidel.<\/p>\n<p>This one in English,<br \/>\nsome in Hebrew, some in Yiddish,<br \/>\nsome saying pshat,<br \/>\nand some saying chiddush.<\/p>\n<p>And up in shomayim,<br \/>\nthe Aibishter decreed,<br \/>\n&#8220;The time has come<br \/>\nfor My children to be freed.<\/p>\n<p>Rouse the Mashiach<br \/>\nfrom his heavenly berth,<br \/>\nhave him get in his chariot<br \/>\nand head down to Earth.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>The Moshiach got dressed,<br \/>\nand with a heart full of glee,<br \/>\nwent down to the Earth, and entered<br \/>\nthe first shteibel he did see.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;I&#8217;m the Moshiach,<br \/>\nHashem has heard your plea,<br \/>\nyour geulah has come,<br \/>\nit is time to go free!&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>They all stopped their learning,<br \/>\nthis was quite a surprise,<br \/>\nAnd they looked at him carefully<br \/>\nwith piercing sharp eyes.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;He&#8217;s not the Mashiach!&#8221;<br \/>\nsaid one with a grin,<br \/>\n&#8220;Just look at his hat,<br \/>\nat the pinches and brim!&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;That&#8217;s right!&#8221;, cried another<br \/>\nwith a grimace and a frown,<br \/>\n&#8220;Whoever heard of Mashiach<br \/>\nwith a brim that is down?!&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Well&#8221;, thought Mashiach,<br \/>\n&#8220;If that is the rule,<br \/>\nI&#8217;ll turn my brim up<br \/>\nbefore I go to the next shule!&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>So he walked on right over<br \/>\nto the next shule in town,<br \/>\nconfident to be accepted<br \/>\nsince his brim was no longer down.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;I&#8217;m the Mashiach!&#8221;, he cried<br \/>\nas he began to enter.<br \/>\nBut the Jews there wanted to know first,<br \/>\nif he was left, right, or center.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Your clothes are so black!&#8221;<br \/>\nthey cried out in a fright.<br \/>\n&#8220;You can&#8217;t be Mashiach &#8212;<br \/>\nyou&#8217;re much too far right!<\/p>\n<p>If you want to be Mashiach,<br \/>\nyou must be properly outfitted.&#8221;<br \/>\nSo they replaced his black hat<br \/>\nwith a kipa that was knitted.<\/p>\n<p>Wearing his new kipa,<br \/>\nMashiach went out and he said,<br \/>\n&#8220;No difference to me<br \/>\nwhat I wear on my head.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>So he went to the next shule,<br \/>\nfor his mission was dear,<br \/>\nBut he was getting a bit frustrated<br \/>\nwith the Yidden down here.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;I&#8217;m the Mashiach!&#8221; he cried,<br \/>\nand they all stopped to stare.<br \/>\nAnd a complete eerie stillness<br \/>\nfilled up the air.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;You&#8217;re the Mashiach?!<br \/>\nJust imagine that.<br \/>\nWhoever heard of Mashiach<br \/>\nwithout a black hat?!&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;But I do have a hat!&#8221;<br \/>\nthe Mashiach then said.<br \/>\nSo he pulled it right out<br \/>\nand plunked it down on his head.<\/p>\n<p>Then the Shule started laughing,<br \/>\nand one said, &#8220;Where&#8217;s your kop?<br \/>\nYou can&#8217;t have Mashiach<br \/>\nwith a brim that is up!<\/p>\n<p>If you want to be Mashiach,<br \/>\nand be accepted in this town,<br \/>\nput some pinches in your hat,<br \/>\nand turn that brim down!&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Mashiach walked out and said,<br \/>\n&#8220;I guess my time hasn&#8217;t really come,<br \/>\nI&#8217;ll just have to return<br \/>\nto where I came from.<\/p>\n<p>So he went to his chariot,<br \/>\nbut as he began to enter,<br \/>\nall sorts of Jews appeared,<br \/>\nfrom left, right, and center.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Please wait, do not leave,<br \/>\nit&#8217;s all THEIR fault!&#8221; they said<br \/>\nAnd they pointed to each other,<br \/>\nand to what was on each other&#8217;s head.<\/p>\n<p>Mashiach just looked sad,<br \/>\nand said, &#8220;You don&#8217;t understand.&#8221;<br \/>\nAnd then started up his chariot<br \/>\nto get out of this land.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Yes, it&#8217;s very wonderful,<br \/>\nthat all of you learn Torah,<br \/>\nBut you seem to have forgotten,<br \/>\na crucial part of our mesorah.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;What does he mean?<br \/>\nWhat&#8217;s he talking about?&#8221;<br \/>\nAnd they all looked bewildered,<br \/>\nand all began to shout.<\/p>\n<p>Mashiach looked back and answered,<br \/>\n&#8220;The first place to start,<br \/>\nis to shut up your mouths,<br \/>\nand open up your heart.<\/p>\n<p>To each of you, certain Yidden<br \/>\nseem too frum or too frei<br \/>\nbut ALL Yidden are beloved,<br \/>\nin the Aibeshter&#8217;s eye.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>And on his way up he shouted,<br \/>\n&#8220;If you want me to come,<br \/>\ntry working a little harder<br \/>\non some ahavas chinam.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>(c) YZF Toronto 1992.
