{"id":59852,"date":"2018-06-06T06:24:18","date_gmt":"2018-06-06T11:24:18","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.ou.org\/life\/?p=59852"},"modified":"2018-06-17T03:49:14","modified_gmt":"2018-06-17T08:49:14","slug":"when-i-went-shopping-this-week","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.ou.org\/life\/health\/when-i-went-shopping-this-week\/","title":{"rendered":"When I Went Shopping This Week"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">I usually do the grocery shopping.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>And I usually go mid-week on the way home from work.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>Needless to say, we make an effort to buy healthier choices.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>But I\u2019ve noticed lately, that the most innocent items on my wife\u2019s shopping list are becoming a real challenge.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>This past Wednesday I went to the grocery store with my list and it seemed like this would be quick and easy.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>After all, the list I got was clean and organized and the items we needs were pretty basic.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>Among the items on the list were, tomato paste, healthy cereal, oatmeal, cookies for my grandchildren for Shabbos, instant soup in a cup, and low fat yogurt.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>Let\u2019s go shopping!<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\"><b>These foods aren\u2019t healthy?<\/b><\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">I arrived at the store and began knocking off the list.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>When I got to the section of tomato sauces and tomato pastes, I picked up container after container only to find that a product I used to buy without every checking the ingredients was now problematic.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>But what used to be simply crushed up tomatoes and some added salt (and I always buy the brand with the least added salt), now both sugar and fructose added to the mix.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>After searching and searching, I did find a different brand with only the two original ingredients and I hope the store continues to carry that brand.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>In the meantime, beware of what you think is just some tomato paste\u2014it might contain things you don\u2019t really want to consume that can be harmful to your health and can negatively affect your weight. <\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">I then made my way over to the breakfast cereals.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>I noticed that the front of most of the cereals had phrases on them such as \u201cA whole grain product\u201d or \u201cHeart Healthy whole grains included\u201d, \u201cLow fat-low sugar\u201d.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>But as I examined each box, unfortunately I didn\u2019t really see these cereals as healthy.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>Yes, some of the ingredients are healthy and good for you.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>But when I looked at the entire product, I also found many harmful ingredients.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>One group of cereals was indeed whole grain and low fat, but full of sugar. Some were whole grain and low sugar, but high in fat.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>Some that said \u201cOnly natural ingredients\u201d were still high in calories. <span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>I did however find the cereals that I have always tried to stick with.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>Nothing like good old shredded wheat\u2014nothing but whole wheat, no sugar and just a touch of salt.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>I personally put in a handful of raisins and some milk and it is a filling and nutritious breakfast.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">On the other side of the aisle, I went to get the oatmeal (porridge for all of your Europeans).<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>I always buy the raw oats in a can or vacuum-packed container.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>But I couldn\u2019t help notice the convenient single serve packages that were there.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>And, they come with different flavorings.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>It didn\u2019t\u2019 take me long to put down the box.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>Not only was their sugar in high amounts in the packets, there were also different kinds of sugars and all kinds of flavorings and flavor enhancers that can be detrimental to your health in many different ways.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>Me?<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>I\u2019ll stick with what I usually get and if you want to sweeten their oatmeal, you can add fruit or a small amount of honey and you will be much better off.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">Next, I ventured over to the dairy section and was looking at the yogurts.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>Today there is a wide variety of yogurts.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>You might see Greek yogurt, low fat yogurt, no fat yogurt, bio yogurt, probiotic yogurts and even more.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>Yogurt should be a healthy food, but by time the manufacturers finish with it, yogurt can turn into a high calorie, unhealthy item.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>Yogurt is a great dairy protein that can be enjoyed even by those who are lactose intolerant.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>It keeps your digestive system in good working order.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>But watch out!<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>More than half the yogurts I looked at had substantial amounts of sugars added and were much higher in calories than you would think.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>This was particularly true of the low-fat variety.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>Remember, when you buy something that has some fat in it, there is a likelihood of a lot less sugar or maybe no sugar at all.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>The best buy?<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>Get a plain unsweetened yogurt (Greek if you like that texture) and it is okay if it has some fat in it\u2014even 3% is just fine.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>You can add a little fruit of a little bit of granola to it and have a really tasty, healthy and filling snack or make it part of your meal. <\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">I knew this coming week was going to be hectic, so even though it is rare, I looked at the instant soups.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>You just add hot water, let it sit for 4 minutes and you have a meal.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>Oh no! Look what\u2019s in this! MSG and a lot of sugar.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>So then I looked at a different one and the front of the container flashed; \u201cNo MSG\u201d.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>Okay, I thought I found what I was looking for but this one was also filled with sugar and was high in salt and other flavor enhancers.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>I continued to search and found one that was imported from abroad.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>No MSG, no sugars added.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>By the way, when I actually ate it the next day, it was very satisfying.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>Who needs all those additives anyway?<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">Finally, I went to find a Shabbos treat for my grandchildren.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>When looking at the cookies, I saw a whole section of healthy cookies and cakes.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>What does \u201chealthy\u201d mean?<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>The packages all said no sugar, made with whole grains, only natural ingredients.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>But when I looked at the ingredients, I either saw artificial sweeteners or hydrogenated oils.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>Artificial sweeteners can cause health problems and trans-fats do cause heart disease. Thank goodness this year the United States has officially banned the use of trans-fats.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>We are all hoping other countries will follow suit.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>Beware that any hydrogenated oil becomes a trans-fat.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>Avoid it at all costs.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>If the kids are old enough, popcorn might be a better alternative anyway.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\"><b>It\u2019s not what it seems<\/b><\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">Research tells us that people think foods with front-of-package health claims (\u201crich in omega-3,\u201d \u201csupports immunity,\u201d \u201clow-fat,\u201d etc.) have fewer calories and are better for their health. This phenomenon is known as the \u201chealth halo effect.\u201d<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>It\u2019s an area extensively studied by Brian Wansink, PhD, a marketing professor and behavioral economics expert at Cornell University in New York.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>Front-of-package claims \u201ccause us to believe the food product is much healthier than it actually is,\u201d says Wansink. And health claim labels like \u201cfree-range, gluten-free, pesticide-free\u201d and \u201cantioxidant-laden\u201d cause consumers to think, \u201cThe more [of this food] we eat, the better.\u201d People typically eat 44% more when there is a health claim on the front label,\u201d he adds.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">The practical effects of the health halo effect have been summarized by author Marion Nestle, PhD, MPH, a professor of nutrition, food studies and public health at New York University. She wrote \u201cHealth claims sell food products. People like buying products with a \u2018health aura,\u2019 no matter how poorly the health claim is supported by science. Science is irrelevant here&#8211;marketing is what\u2019s relevant\u201d.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>What\u2019s the end result?<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>Consumers usually believe front-of-package claims, perceive them to be government-endorsed and use them to ignore the more evidence-based Nutrition Facts Label on the back or side of the packaging (Nestle &amp; Ludwig 2010).<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\"><b>The bottom line<\/b><\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">It pays to be an educated and smart grocery shopper.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>Find out where the health traps are.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>Food manufacturers\u2019 bottom line is selling products and being able to manufacture them as cheaply as possible, even if it cost you your health.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>They will fool you with healthy looking slogans but read the side panels and back of the box, bag, container or can of food you are thinking of purchasing.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>As food journalist Michael Pollin wrote in some of his books, if you can\u2019t pronounce the ingredients or if they didn\u2019t exist when your grandmother was alive, you might think twice about purchasing the product.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>Remember that sugars come in many form and high fructose corn syrup is especially harmful to your health.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>Trans-fats are on the way out, but they are still around and they do cause heart disease. Eating some fat can be a good thing, especially when the low fat product has more sugar (as most of them do) than the fattier version.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">Before you go shopping, be up to date on what good nutrition is.
