{"id":58841,"date":"2017-12-12T05:18:35","date_gmt":"2017-12-12T10:18:35","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.ou.org\/life\/?p=58841"},"modified":"2017-12-21T02:36:44","modified_gmt":"2017-12-21T07:36:44","slug":"when-less-is-more","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.ou.org\/life\/health\/physical-health\/when-less-is-more\/","title":{"rendered":"When Less is More"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">As Chanukah is here, my house is quiet.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>All of my children are married and out of the house.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 \u00a0 <\/span>I quickly remembered times when we needed a large table for all of the <i>menorahs<\/i>, how candle-lighting took a long time as each child recited the <i>brachos<\/i> (blessings) and we sang <i>Haneiros Hallalu<\/i> and <i>Maoz Tur<\/i> afterwards.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>I realized that even though there was less light being generated from Chanukah <i>menorahs<\/i> in my home these days, it is because less was now more.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>There was only one <i>menorah<\/i> burning in our home because in the homes of my married children, there were many more <i>menorahs<\/i> burning &#8211; those of my children and grandchildren.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">A Rabbi who was a personal training client of mine years ago once said to me that when he travels back to the United States from Eretz Yisrael (he has been in Israel for more than 40 years now), he notices that the word <i>\u201cbetter\u201d<\/i> in America seems to go hand and hand with the <i>\u201cbigger and more.\u201d<\/i><span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>Success is translated as more money, more cars, bigger cars, bigger homes, bigger weddings, more food for your money in a restaurant and longer vacations. We strive to build bigger airliners and larger sports stadiums.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>Yet, it hit me this past Chanukah, that <i>bigger<\/i> and <i>more<\/i> are not necessarily really better.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>Many times, less is indeed more.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>And then I realized that my entire profession is based on that concept. <\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">We all know and understand that when it comes to weight, more is harmful and less is best.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>Less translates into good health and a happy life.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>As the owner and director of the weight loss program <b>10 Weeks to Health<\/b>, I spend my days working with people who want more out of life, and need to learn how to do with less in order to achieve their goals.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">Carrying too much weight causes an array of life-threatening health problems such as heart disease, cancer, type 2 diabetes, and fatty liver disease.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>In addition, problems that affect our quality of life such as osteoarthritis, digestive issues, depression and problems of self-esteem, depression and self-confidence are prevalent in the overweight and obese.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>However, having seen success after success in my clinic, I also see how less is more.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>I watch week after week as people come in with new blood tests showing better sugar numbers and lower cholesterol.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>They ask me to check their blood pressure just to make sure they heard their doctor right, they are shocked that for the first time in years they are not hypertensive.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>And just as important, the clinic staff watches people transform over the three months they are with us in terms of attitude and stress.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>The same techniques we use to get people to lose weight &#8211; a proper food program, proper exercise and behavioral changes &#8211; are easily applied in other aspects of their life.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">Less is indeed more, but it can\u2019t happen in one day or one week.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>This learning process takes time &#8211; months for most people.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>But the rewards you gain (and the weight you lose!), both in terms of physical health and mental well-being, are the <i>&#8220;more&#8221;<\/i> here.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>Those who succeed find it hard to believe that they were ever in the <i>\u201cmore and bigger is better\u201d<\/i> mode.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">There is a great sense of accomplishment that you feel at the end of this road. Here are a few tips for you to consider to get started on your weight loss journey to good health:<\/span><\/p>\n<ol class=\"ol1\">\n<li class=\"li1\"><span class=\"s1\">Diets are not good. They initiate a fleeting process at best, only to be abandoned ultimately. The better option is to learn how to eat healthfully, control your portion sizes and don\u2019t let yourself get hungry. Also, maintain good hydration with water.\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li class=\"li1\"><span class=\"s1\">Learn the difference between real hunger and desiring food for other reasons.<\/span><\/li>\n<li class=\"li1\"><span class=\"s1\">Exercise must be part of your life, and a priority.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>Learn what a balanced exercise program is and fit it into you day.<\/span><\/li>\n<li class=\"li1\"><span class=\"s1\">Learn how to prioritize.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>Don\u2019t be afraid to put yourself first when you have to.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>It is a great<i> mitzvah<\/i> to help others, but helping yourself is crucial too. <\/span><\/li>\n<li class=\"li1\"><span class=\"s1\">Write it all down!<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>Track your food and your exercise and even your sabotaging thoughts.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>And when you do something great, write that down too!<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>Giving yourself credit for your accomplishments is just as important.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">Remember that in spite of what we see around us, <b><i>LESS<\/i><\/b> is indeed <b><i>MORE, <\/i><\/b>just<b> <\/b>like the <i>menorah<\/i> burning in your home or your scale trending down.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>And when it comes to your health, losing weight in a careful and healthy manner is without a doubt much, much <b><i>MORE.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span><\/i>\u201cadd hours to our day, days to your year and years to ou<\/b><\/span><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>As Chanukah is here, my house is quiet.\u00a0 All of my children are married and out of the house.\u00a0 \u00a0 I quickly remembered times when we needed a large table for all of the menorahs, how candle-lighting took a long time as each child recited the brachos (blessings) and we sang Haneiros Hallalu and Maoz<\/p>\n","protected":false},"author":469,"featured_media":58871,"comment_status":"closed","ping_status":"closed","sticky":false,"template":"","format":"standard","meta":{"_acf_changed":false,"footnotes":""},"categories":[16],"tags":[],"class_list":["post-58841","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","has-post-thumbnail","hentry","category-physical-health"],"yoast_head":"<!-- This site is optimized with the Yoast SEO plugin v24.9 - https:\/\/yoast.com\/wordpress\/plugins\/seo\/ -->\n<title>When Less is More - OU Life<\/title>\n<meta name=\"description\" content=\"People who want more out of life need to learn how to do with less in order to achieve their goals.
