{"id":58793,"date":"2017-11-29T15:57:31","date_gmt":"2017-11-29T20:57:31","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.ou.org\/life\/?p=58793"},"modified":"2017-12-04T14:21:45","modified_gmt":"2017-12-04T19:21:45","slug":"dont-be-hungry","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.ou.org\/life\/health\/dont-be-hungry\/","title":{"rendered":"Don\u2019t Be Hungry"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">The benefits of being a normal and healthy weight are countless.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>Of course, going about weight loss the proper way, and not \u201cdieting\u201d is essential to keeping your weight off.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>One of the downfalls of dieting is that many fad diets or calorie restrictive diets can leave a person feeling hungry.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>Hunger and deprivation are known to sabotage any weight loss effort.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>One of the iron-clad rules in my clinic that my staff of dieticians follow, is to make sure that people aren\u2019t hungry.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>If clients complain that they are, we adjust their program so they aren\u2019t.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>One of the reasons that we advise our clients to eat small meals and snacks 5-6 times per day, is specifically so they don\u2019t feel hunger.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>Nevertheless, some people do feel hunger even when they really aren\u2019t physiologically hungry.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>This was the case of Mindy, age 44, who came to us for weight loss a few months ago.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">Mindy received a food plan that should have allowed her to lose weight and at the same time feel satiated.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>At the 4<\/span><span class=\"s2\"><sup>th<\/sup><\/span><span class=\"s1\"> session her weight had not dropped.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>It wasn\u2019t going up which had been the case, but according to our calculations, it should have been going down. Even though her choices were healthy, her food logs indicated that she was eating too much.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>When I pointed this out, her response was that she can\u2019t help it, she\u2019s hungry.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>What is real hunger as opposed to eating for desire, cravings and emotions? Real hunger occurs when your stomach is empty and there is a gnawing feeling in the pit of your empty stomach.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>Non-hunger is the desire to eat when your stomach isn\u2019t empty.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>People eat for all kinds of reasons outside of hunger.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>People use food for comfort when upset.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>Sometimes when we are tired we eat in an effort to stay awake.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>And more often than not, when you are on a new weight loss program, you have to get used to not eating as much as you did.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>It really can just be a matter of habit.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>If you\u2019ve been eating 3 grilled breasts of chicken at meals, then cutting that portion in half (1 \u00bd) becomes difficult. <\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\"><b>Not an emergency<\/b><\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">People fear being hungry but there is no emergency.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>Hunger passes!<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>Everyone reading this has fasted on Yom Kippur.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>Sometime mid-morning or toward noon you get a hunger pang.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>You feel hunger but then it goes away.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>We try never to be hungry but sometimes it happens.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>You were on the road and got home late or didn\u2019t prepare your food to take with you.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>Try to drink some water and eat when you get home.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>Just be careful NOT to overeat. <\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\"><b>An important 20 minutes<\/b><\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">Hunger and Satiation are controlled by two hormones; ghrelin and leptin.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>Leptin is a hormone, made by fat cells, that decreases your appetite. Ghrelin is a hormone that increases appetite, and also plays a role in body weight.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>One of the biggest problems that we have discovered that leptin is delayed in kicking in to tell you that you are indeed full.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>It now takes about 20 minutes for that to happen.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\"><b>Here are some tips to fight being hungry and be successful in your weight loss quest:<\/b><\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li class=\"li1\"><span class=\"s1\">Plan your 3 meals and 2 or 3 snacks in advance.
